We've been at AISU since it's second year. It has been an amazing experience for us. At the end of the '17-'18 school year there were major staff changes. This let to major board changes. It took most of this (the following) school year to adjust. I was almost convinced the school wouldn't recover and then in the past month or so, it's starting to run beautifully again! I am VERY excited for my son to spend his high school years here! I'll try to describe some specific things that make AISU ideal for my child in comparison to our neighborhood public school. 1) Most of the teachers are very highly educated, and are early in their teaching careers. They go by their first names. They are on FIRE with passion for their subjects. (A neighbor was under the impression there just wasn't much schoolwork. This is definitely not the case.) They use laptops and TONS of interaction in class, so textbooks and paper homework aren't the norm. It's one of the few schools that runs on the scientifically proven understanding that daily performance of music boosts academic performance for all students. The performing arts programs are amazing and the STEAM is better than any other school any of my 5 kids has attended. This model is great for people who thrive in an environment of mutual respect and personal accountability.

Well, the food isn't the best the school is nice. Although it does not help a lot with trying to make you learn at your own pace. Although they said they would fix that next school year

It's horrible they eat trash, and the reading groups the 4th and5th graders do are so stupid because they give you assignments on stuff you already know, but that take forever. I've seen a staff member throw a school computer. The staff also pretend to be all nice. I do not recommend doing elementary here. I go here so trust me ,I know. Also the upper elementary classes do a super long crew that has super long greeting you rarely learn about other people .

My son attended AISU for a year and a half. I can't believe that I actually kept him there for as long as I did. He attended for middle school, so I can't speak to elementary or high school programs. The schools makes so many wonderful promises, that unfortunately are not reality. My son is incredibly intelligent, so we were excited for the learning at your own pace. He would finish the entire week's worth of work in 20 minutes and was just forced to sit for the rest of the week. The teachers don't teach for the most part. Many are just sitting on their phones all day. Students are told to work on their chromebooks, and so many just play games all day. Discipline is pretty rare at this school. They make is nearly impossible to fail here. The work is minimal and incredibly easy. When we swapped his school mid year, we realized just how far behind the AISU curriculum is. I constantly expressed my feelings to administration. They were sympathetic but nothing changed. The honors program was just a few different work sheets in a folder that kids could do if they wanted honors credit. I had such high hopes for this school, but alas, it severely disappointed. My son loved it because it was easy. Kind of like a glorified daycare. One of the women in the front office is a mess. Incredibly rude, and doesn't know whats going on. Even simple questions, such as whether they had school the next day, were met with, "i don't know". Great class options and the intensive program is fun but it all comes at the cost of a lower level education.

Undoubtedly the biggest dumpster fire of a "school" I've ever had to endure. I've attended this hole since its first year at 8th grade. At the time, I had such high hopes for the school and its growth (Before AISU, I was attending a public middle school where I was bullied and had trouble keeping up with the rushed curriculum.) The first year was rough, as expected for a new school, second year felt more controlled but still was heavily flawed, and since then, the quality of AISU has been going into a downward spiral that's clear as day to those who unfortunately still attend. Now, the so-called "work at your own pace" concept of the school is as good as dead, and it's those who need more time or are struggling with understanding what they're supposed to learn that suffer the most. This is because first off, there's too much that is crammed into each class in a 9-week period. At the beginning of each trimester, we are introduced to the ridiculous quantity of work and lessons we are expected to do and "learn", as that's all we intend on doing with our time. It should also be mentioned that this work generally consists of hours of sitting on the computer, the messiest action projects, and stressfully extensive research and note taking on a topic (which sometimes, evidence of taking notes is actually required, but is rarely ever stated clearly). The actual "learning" experience you'll be getting in each class is quite the game of gambling. Will you get a teacher who's proactive, effective in teaching, and is willing to help at any given moment? Will you get the airhead who is apathetic to their class and doesn't know what's going on? Will you end up with the insanely ineffective, rushed, impersonal, and simply pitiful excuse of a teacher who's only hired based upon their degree? Who knows, as the possible fate of how you're able to function throughout each trimester is sure to vary! Also, around the end of the trimester, sometimes (if you're lucky) the teacher will come to realize how much they've screwed over the kids, and make last minute changes to what's required, which although is relieving, it's also quite frustrating, as it makes all that time you spent into understanding topics and doing certain assignments feel as good as wasted. Nothing like spending hours on end in such uncomfortable environments, staying awake through rushed lectures, straining your eyes from working on the computer for so long, and fearing you may have to take summer school or repeat a year because of how ineffective the learning experience here is, thus resulting in you not being able to acquire the one thing this school cares about: good grades on your report card. Which brings me to my next issue with this horrid place, the schoolwide competencies! These competencies are by far the most ridiculous I've ever seen, especially for a place that has so many issues. To those who are unaware of what they are, the school's competencies will NOT let you pass a class unless you get an 84% or higher, and for the most part, that applies to each assignment in the classes. To add onto this, there are a few teachers (one in particular from my perspective) whose policies on late work and retakes only keep on getting worse, I can't imagine how they don't realize how much they're inconveniencing their students. My mom has worked here for a couple years as a middle school success coach, then an elementary special ed teacher, but transferred over to RSL's new charter school with a few other colleagues, so at least she knows about how screwed this place is, and is willing to help me through it until I can finally transfer schools.
