I am a regular Avis customer, and I have never felt so bad at being a Avis’s Preferred Plus customer. If you are booking through Avis, please don’t book here. Airport might be your best bet if you are in Providence area.

Made a reservation weeks beforehand. When we showed up, we were told in no uncertain terms there was no car available. When we protested, we were met with a barrage of insults and kicked out of the downtown Providence location. I treat my dog better than we were treated.

I know that you can't judge a rental company by one experience, but I will say that the one experience we had with Avis was spectacular. We needed to rent a 7-passenger van for a full month while hosting family. Avis had a deal going that gave us a van at nearly half the price of any other company. When I picked the van up the manager upgraded me to an even nicer van than the one I reserved at no extra charge, just because he had it available. We used the van for the entire month happily, but had a mechanical problem right at the end. It was a fault in the design of the van's power doors -- not the fault of Avis. I called road side assistance, and they delivered a new van to my location and towed that one away within 90 minutes. They had a new contract ready in hand to reflect the change in vehicles, and I returned my rental at the end of the month with no extra questions or paperwork at all because of the vehicle swap. Excellent service overall, and I definitely plan to rent from Avis again in the future.

We had never rented from Avis before but they had a good price through Costco so we thought we would give it a try. Right when we walked in the door the manager was YELLING at his front desk lady for apparently giving someone a car that was the wrong car. He had a terrible temper and was pacing like a mad man with his fists and jaws clenched. He then "apologized" to us, as if we were the person he was being rude to, not his employee. He then went into his office and literally slammed the door. She then apologized to us. He quickly came bursting out of his office and went outside. I apologized for her for having to work for such a person. Later the agent was having troubles with something so the manager came up to help her and he saw that she had transposed two numbers from the key fob onto paper. He pointed out her error in a way a manager shouldn't. He laughed at her, tried to get us to laugh with him, and stated her error. He made some terribly and mean joke and looked at my partner and said "laugh, that was funny." This man, short and rotund, should NOT be a manager at any place of business. He feels the weight of his responsibilities and takes it out on his employees. Next, the car that we received was fine on the outside but it smelled as if it had been hotboxed in (a way of smoking pot) for days. They put a bunch of air fresheners in the car to try and mask the smell. We were going across state lines and I was actually concerned that we might be stopped for the smell at the border. The smell never left the vehicle the entire trip. My friends in Canada kept joking that I should share the pot with them. They thought it was funny that I might actually get stopped at the border on the way home. Then we thought, 'what if there actually was pot hidden in the car and that's why it wouldn't go away.' Either way, thankfully we didn't get in any trouble from the smell.

If I could give this place zero stars I would, the manager named SCOTT was extremely rude and disrespectful, arguing with me because of a glitch in their system that mistakenly charged me a cheaper price, mind you I booked this car in March , which they ened up canceling on me without calling or emailing me to notify me what was happening. They would not honor the price or car I was quoted for when I reserved the car back in March, and now I'm stuck with no car and I have to go to a wedding in one week. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone and I will be reporting this to the better business bureau
