My husband walked in during the week to secure a reservation for a pick up on Saturday morning. No problem at all, the guy behind the counter compared prices of Budget and Avis to get the best deal possible. My husband was very pleased. So far so good ...

On Saturday, we went to pick up the car he had made a reservation for. We had to wait a bit because the woman in front of him in line started a huge discussion about the car she should have received, but which obviously wasn't large enough for her taste (Ford Taurus) ... So the girl behind the counter gave her an upgrade into the Premium category.

Now it was our turn. First of all, we were told that our reserved category (guess what - Premium ...) was no longer available and she could only offer us a Ford Taurus or similar. Of course for less money. Well, what else could we do, we agreed.
Then she swiped my husband's debit card, asked for his SSN and after some clicking here and there on her computer, she finally told us we could not get a car at all because our lack of credit history! We have been living in the US for two years (as non-resident aliens), always paid our bills, and are not worthy of renting a stupid car for a week??? We would have left a cash deposit of the estimated cost, but no, that was not a possibility. His childhood friend, who was visiting us as a tourist, could have rented the car, but would have had to return it himself. But everything was set up for dropping him up at the airport halfway home.

Trying to stay polite, my husband just said "Well, it seems we run into a dead end then". That was enough for the girl to end the conversation,  leave us alone, and help the next costumer. No further eye contact, no apology, no offer to calm us down AT ALL because especially my husband was very upset.

The guys ended up taking our own car for the trip, leaving me in town with no car at all. Jokingly, I said to rent a vehicle from U-haul in case I would need a ride this week as that has never been a problem. NEVER EVER are we going to rent a car from Avis/Budget again!
