Do not rent from this location, it is independently owned, service is terrible. Rented a car and it was filled with bottles under the seat and an empty vacuum box in the trunk. I checked out and asked for a receipt and they said they would email it because they were lazy. 2 days and I still didn't get a receipt. Called to ask for a receipt and the person who answered placed me on hold and never came back. I called back and asked for the managers name and she only gave me the manager's first name and refused to give me the managers last name. They can take my money but don't want to give the managers name. Liz is the person that answered  the phone. Terrible service.

After driving the rental for four days without incident,  I was driving to visit friends in another town and was pulled over by a state trouper for reasons that are still not clear to me.
He said he pulled me over for a temporary plate that didn't match the windshield sticker. I gave him the rental agreement and he then proceeded to take my passport, drivers licence and rental agreement back to his car. Upon his return, he then took the sticker off the windshield and said that it didn't match with the plate number on the car and that it was for another vehicle. He then explained to us that if we got into an accident or anything that the insurance we paid for in the agreement would not cover anything because the licence plate number on the car did not match the licence plate number in the rental agreement. 
The officer then gave me a warning for "operating a vehicle with wrong licence plate-registration". He could have given a fine but did not.
I took this information back to Avis McAllen airport location and the employee did not know what to do so he took copies of everything and said the manager would call, which she did not. I then called her, four days after her expected call, and basically she just said she would "look into it".

Detained by Authorities for Reported Stolen Rental

I had a horrible experience renting from Avis and they did not do a single thing to help.  I rented a car from AVIS at the McAllen Airport.  On December 14, 2015, I needed a car to travel to San Antonio for business.  When I arrived to pick up the car, Miguel the Avis representative said that he could not find my reservation.   Instead of offering to help, he said that there was nothing he could do.  I got the feeling that Miguel really enjoyed telling me this.  I had to call the travel agency that made my reservation.  Apparently they had done a data entry error.   After half an hour of waiting I drove off with my Avis rental never expecting what was going to happen next.   

When I arrived at the Falfurrias check point I was detained for driving a STOLEN car.   I showed them my rental agreement and they said that I had to wait for the Brooks County Sheriff to come and clear the vehicle.  Everybody knows how efficient rural Texas sheriff deputies are.  While I waited I could not leave the room I was in, use the phone, and stand up from where I was told to sit.  After 2+ hours of waiting for a deputy sheriff and being DEPRIVED OF MY FREEDOM nobody came.  I was let go and told that I could be pulled over by police at any point in my trip for driving a car that was reported STOLEN.  We all know how police officers treat suspected car thieves.  I drove the rest of the trip running the risk of being stopped by police at gun point.  

I called Avis and Clarissa, the branch manager, apologized and said that they were going to do everything possible to take another vehicle to my hotel.  She also added that all my rental fees were going to be waived.  After a few hours of waiting she called and said that “CORPORATE’ was not helping and there was nothing they could do.  The next day I had to spend two hours of my time looking for an Avis in San Antonio and trading in the car.

Overall I was DEPRIVED OF MY FREEDOM, drove a reported stolen rental, ran the risk of being arrested at gun point, and lost valuable time.  When I returned the car I was charged for the fees they had promised to waive, and given a meaningless “Oooh, I am sorry”.

Awful stranded at Mc Allen airport the website let's you rent from this location knowing it is not open after 11pm and no way of contacting anyone...

This location is not here u have to go to the airport to rent a car !! And they don't deliver the car to you !!
