Bandelier National Monument

About

Bandelier preserves homes of the Ancestral Pueblo people. Travel back in time, challenge yourself, and learn about other cultures at Bandelier.

Story

The park is 50 square miles of the Pajarito Plateau, on the slopes of the Jemez Volcanic field. It ranges in elevation from about 5000' along the Rio Grande to over 10,000' at the rim of the Valles Caldera, providing for a wide range of life zones and wildlife habitat. There are only 3 miles of road, but over 70 miles of hiking trails. Check out our wall photos to get an idea of the striking landscape, and come by the Visitor Center for information on things to see and do.

This is a great place to go With kids of all ages. Make sure you stop and get the junior ranger packet 1st and don't forget a pencil. Bring plenty of water and plan to walk over a mile on almost every trail. It's far enough away from town that I would recommend packing lunch. I just want to get enough words on this post so that I earn extra points please like my post as helpful. Yay for national parks

Tour of pueblo is very interesting. Takes about 1 hour. Need to climb stairs and some ladders to see inside the buildings. The walk around the stream is very pretty. Campground is primitive but well maintained. Sites can be tight and very few pull thru spaces. You can not take a trailer into the pueblo area, and a large motor home would have difficulty getting down to the pueblo. Road is steep and narrow. We stayed 4 nights and enjoyed it very much.

Very beautiful true New Mexico experience. Make sure you have comfortable shoes and a bottle of water. The park Office closes at 5 but the park itself is open until 7 p.m. which gave us enough time to see everything we wanted. My knees aren't great so it was a bit challenging at times but well worth it. A great Excursion on a beautiful sunny day. There are some petroglyphs there but they really don't compare to the ones in Albuquerque.

The foot tour of this amazing place can last for hours. There is plenty of parking. Wear comfortable shoes and if you can climb into some of the small and large living quarters in the mountainside, you will enjoy that experience. With all of my comforts it's hard to imagine tribes of people living here. Yet it is so imaginable because of its beauty, peace and natural surroundings. Our friend acted as a tour guide and told many stories about the daily living patterns of the 1st Nation People who called this home. There is so much to discover here. While we were here we experienced a hail storm. The photo shows the size of the ice pellets that came down on this relatively hot day. There is a river and wonderful photo opportunities on this trip. Enjoy.

Please don’t forget to touch and feel the sand that Pueblo people had lived in. The view in the way here is also beautiful. People here are also very nice. If you have a chance to enter one of the caves like, you can imagine those landscapes Pueblo people had enjoyed and understand why they had to live like that.
