Battleship USS Iowa Museum

Story

USS Iowa is the lead ship of her class of battleship and the fourth in the United States Navy to be named after the state of Iowa. Owing to the cancellation of the s, Iowa is the last lead ship of any class of United States battleships and was the only ship of her class to have served in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II.During World War II, she carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt across the Atlantic to Mers El Kébir, Algeria, en route to a meeting of vital importance in 1943 in Tehran with Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Britain and Josef Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union. When transferred to the Pacific Fleet in 1944, Iowa shelled beachheads at Kwajalein and Eniwetok in advance of Allied amphibious landings and screened aircraft carriers operating in the Marshall Islands. She also served as the Third Fleet flagship, flying Adm. William F. Halsey's flag at the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. During the Korean War, Iowa was involved in raids on the North Korean coast, after which she was decommissioned into the United States Navy reserve fleets, better known as the "mothball fleet." She was reactivated in 1984 as part of the 600-ship Navy plan and operated in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets to counter the recently expanded Soviet Navy. In April 1989, an explosion of undetermined origin wrecked her No. 2 gun turret, killing 47 sailors.

I took the Full Steam Ahead tour, which is apparently only in it's first few months of operation. That being said, it was a great value, in spite of its price. Being able to have a more personalized experience is incredible. You're also able to descend into areas of the ship not open to the general public on the self guided tour (watch your head, wear real shoes, and be ready to walk and climb ladders!). The personal anecdotes and stories the guides tell are awesome and the technical information they give is great, too. They ask at the end of the tour if there's any thing they can add...I just shook my head, they cover so much. But it's cool to know they're looking to expand to the tour. Well recommended!!!

If you're ever in LA, definitely take the time to see this amazing battleship. If you're a current Iowa resident, admission is free when you show your Iowa ID (bonus!); otherwise, it's $20. Well worth the price. There's even an app you can download for your self-guided tour - it really enhanced the experience. One of my favorite things was the ringing of the bell and announcement (name, rank, and military branch) of current or veteran military personnel boarding for a visit. So awesome! There is the requisite gift shop: I was more than happy to part with some of my money! I'm totally proud to be an Iowan!

The USS Iowa is a maritime and history buffs dream. The volunteers who make the tours possible love their service and do an excellent job. My son and I visited from out of state a few weeks ago and we enjoyed the experience thoroughly. How many people can claim to have been on a ship and seen the quarters where President Franklin Roosevelt stayed? The ship is huge and you travel 5 stories to experience it all. I did have problems with the audio tour but that may have just been my phone. Plenty to see and read without the audio though. Be aware the main deck is handicap accessible, but not the majority of the ship.

A huge ship and a good, long guided tour. Great to meet both experienced sailors (including one WW2 veteran and others who served on the Iowa more recently) and enthusiastic civilian volunteers. Interpretation is generally good. The only negative is that admission is a little expensive and you don't get to see below decks—only on the (much more expensive) Full Steam Ahead Engineering tour. Still: that money is the main sources of funding for the ongoing work to restore, interpret and open more areas of the ship, and even the main tour can easily take 2-3 hours if you take your time, so go if you can!

One of the most nostalgic places I’ve ever visited. It was an honor to be there. We spent all day there. Could have spent days talking with all the veterans on the ship. Some actually served on the USS Iowa during WWII. All the volunteers are open to all questions. Great for all ages and very safe place to visit. Parking lot is huge! Not a far walk at all to the battle ship.
