Story

"BookOff, For People Who Don't Throw Away"

A company that builds the infrastructure for "People Who Don't Throw Away".

The business model of our company is to facilitate a circulation-based “economic society” by purchasing, cleaning, stocking, and re-selling goods brought in by our customers, as well as enhancing goods in stock to correspond to present demand.

Unlike conventional used goods stores, the products bought from customers are cleaned as much as possible, in order to put a large variety of like-new recycled books on the shelves in a clean and brightly lit store. This business model corresponds to the concerns and benefits of economically recycling and reusing items in today's society.

Sad that I'm yet another one star rating for what used to be a great store. It's went considerably downhill over time. The employees are not helpful in anyway and their "do what ever they can to keep you from returning a defective game/cd etc they sold you" policy is out of control. The last straw for me today was checking out and having my total come to $9.86 and have the cashier say new policy 2 days ago $10 minimum on card transactions. I said fine add a 14 cent tip or whatever to the total. No dice, she couldn't be bothered to go the extra distance to make the customer happy. I was offering free money for crying out loud! I was spending on average $50 to $100 a month in that store, not a huge amount but it adds up. Now I will never step foot in there again. I'll bring my buisness to a store that appreciate me.

Bookstores are a creature slowly becoming extinct and I am so glad that I have one of the best in my backyard. The storefront is a bright spot on this ever-changing stretch of Haight Street. The window displays are lovely. The "suggested" books are aplenty and varied. Also, and this is more of a hidden gem, they have an AMAZING card selection. Cards for every occasion. Don't buy your next "Happy Wedding" card at Target. Come here : )

Generally I enjoy going here and seeing what I can find among the shelves. The store has changed since it opened though and it can be a very hit or miss experience. I've only traded in books and a few games here once when it first opened so I can't give a personal experience on how that is now. Their books/comics/manga, CD's and movies/blu rays are generally very fairly priced and it's easy to get some good deals. Most of what I've picked up from those categories tends to be in good condition and for only a few dollars I don't mind a tiny bit of wear and tear, as long as it works. The biggest issue I have is with their video game prices lately. I remember when it first opened, most of their games were really cheap, I don't expect to find thrift store prices but they really need to have a better pricing system with their games. Some things are way too overpriced. Example: I saw a used copy of Dead of Alive Paradise in their PSP section, BUT it was priced at more than $100. I immediately pulled out my phone and did a quick ebay/online search and found multiple copies of the game for about $20-$30 dollars average, it wasn't a hard to find game online either. I don't know what kind of data base they use to price their used games but that needs a massive overhaul. I could probably do the same thing for other games as well. My gripes with their game prices aside, overall Bookoff is still a nice store to go in and hunt for deals, just don't go in expecting to find something specific. Go in expecting to be surprised

Worst Book-off in LA! Rude employees, overpriced games that are cheaper in their other stores, and lack of consistency on their pricing. Two different copies of the same game cost about $13.99 & $9.99 and the $13.99 was in worse shape than the $9.99. Ridiculous! Go to the other Book-offs! Friendlier staff & better prices.
