Boxcar Books and Community Center is a volunteer-powered, collectively organized bookstore and community space which supports the Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project.

We provide free meeting space, hang out space, and host readings and events. Call us, or email [email protected] to reserve the space!

Our collection includes used and new titles, both classic and contemporary fiction and non, with everything from Philosophy and Prison Issues to Cookbooks and Crafts. We have a wide selection of zines (self-published magazines) covering a range of topics, and a Discount section with titles for $2 and less!

Great little non-profit bookstore. Volunteer run, supporting the Bloomington Pages to Prisoners project. They carry a lot of local books on consignment, as well as a variety of popular fiction and nonfiction. They are unique in their selection of zines and other counterculture, anarchist, and queer literature, including books and magazines. The front room serves as a free community area and event space. They welcome anyone from the community to make use of their amenities, from college students, to ordinary citizens, to the local homeless population. I have hosted several successful poetry readings there and they are great hosts. I have also bought a lot of books from them, made donations to Pages to Prisoners, and have even sold quite a few poetry books through the store.

Super lovely place with books and zines that you won't find anywhere else in Bloomington. Be sure to check out their free events calendar on the wall across from the front door for upcoming films, talks, and poetry readings.

I like to support local businesses so, despite their limited selection, I've made an effort to purchases from Boxcar in the past. Today their store hours list them opening at 11am. I waited out front until 1130 and no one showed up. Ill be shopping at Barnes and Nobel in the future.

If they look like they're closed during open hours, try calling the store. Sometimes they forget to flip the sign. I have quite a few memories attached to Boxcar. We need more spaces like these.
