Brookside Nature Center is operated by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Montgomery Parks

Story

Since 1961, Brookside Nature Center has engaged visitors in fun and meaningful ways to connect to both the natural and cultural resources in Montgomery County. Located within Wheaton Regional Park, the nature center interprets local natural and cultural history through programs, exhibits, hands-on nature discovery areas, Bay-friendly gardens, nature trails, accessible, interpretive boardwalks, and our unique nature play area.
We provide naturalist-led programs that explore the dynamic areas of parkland to the public, school children, scouts, and other groups.

Mission

Protect and interpret our valuable natural and cultural resources; balance demand for recreation with the need for conservation; encourage healthy lifestyles; and provide clean, safe, and accessible fun for all.

I have been here at least once every two weeks for the past 2 years. My wife and my two year old love it even more than I do if that's even possible. It is absolutely a gorgeous Safe Haven in the middle of urban jungle. You completely forget that you are in the city. There's a manicured Garden as well as about a mile of perimeter path with multiple other circuitous pads to walk on both in open field and in wooded Garden. There is a beautiful Pond that always has Turtles and geese. And there is so much more!

The visitors center here is fantastic! So many engaging and interesting Hands-On things for kids. Grown ups learned a lot too! We also walked around some of the trails, the boardwalk sound the lake, the Pioneer cabin, and exploration playground. Wonderful, and free!

The naturalists are very knowledgeable and the staff after so friendly. Awesome place to send kids to summer camp and everyday adventures.
