We stayed in the SOUTH loop site 45 and had a wonderful time. Highly recommend sites 45, 47, 49 which face the river and are on the south loop (the north loop has all the big RVs so if you are a tent/car camper then avoid!). The odd number sites are reservable ahead and the even numbers are first come first serve. Lots of trees and good spacing made the sites feel private. Not to mention beautiful views of the river where buffalo frequently wander by!! Toilet facilities were clean and serviceable, nothing spectacular but not bad by any means. We found the staff to be attentive and friendly- they stopped by to chat and let us know about the ranger programs each evening. Location of campground is great for accessing hiking & nature trails. Note that the walk-in tent sites (55-59 etc) seem like they would be more secluded on the map, but they are actually less private and more exposed because there are a lot less big trees over in that area.

We stayed at the Cottonwood Campground in June, and had a wonderful experience. The view on the west side of the campground is stunning, and we saw bison walking right through campsites on the East side. If you are visiting Theodore Rosevelt National Park, I don't think there is a better place to stay than in the park. We stayed in the only group site, and highly recommend it. The site came with it's own covered picnic pavilion, three tables, and four tent pads spaces generously out. And great views. The bathrooms are primitive at best, but not gross. There is easy access to water, and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

Would highly recommend! Camped right by the river and casually saw wild horses and bison right by the campground!

Bison roaming the campground. Don't burn their dried poop. I got a visit from the Ranger for foraging.

Excellent National Park campground, semi-primitive (no hookups or showers). Sites are usually sheltered by trees, most with easy pull-thrus. Many sites excellent for tents. In early season it gets excited as bison freely wander through the campground grazing on the greener grass back in the trees.
