Story

The Gold Hill Hotel is a picturesque country inn located in Gold Hill, Nevada, one mile south of Virginia City in the Comstock Historic District. It is the oldest hotel in Nevada and offers guest facilities in the original 1861 stone structure, a 1987 addition, and several separate historic lodges. Each room features a private bath and is uniquely decorated in period style with antiques and reproductions. The Crown Point Restaurant offers fine dining, and the Gold Hill Saloon provides guests with a rustic environment to relax and unwind.

The Gold Hill Hotel is easily accessible from Dayton, Mound House, and Carson City via US 50 and State Routes 341 and 342, and from Reno via State Routes 341 and 342.

Last year we celebrated our anniversary dinner at the Crown Point and we had an incredibly delightful experience. The food was great, the service superb and the ambiance quiet and stately for such an occasion. We decided to go back this year for a special dinner and what a mistake it turned out to be. The evening started out as expected however a large group of locals were seated at an adjoining table and proceeded to be obnoxiously boisterous and loud. Our expensive dinner was ruined and although the owner was kind enough to pick up our tab, the point was that our evening was completely destroyed. Don't be fooled by the appearance of the dining room which is actually exquisite. Any dining experience will always depend on the type of people who are allowed to occupy the restaurant. When you spend $150 on dinner, make sure the surroundings are equivalent to the price tag. Our retirement budget will never contribute another nickel to this establishment.

New York Steak & Lobster Tail (special - $24) seemed like a great deal and the presentation was quite stunning! The steak was cooked to medium rare and was tender and juicy. But the lobster had an ammoniated scent as if it had been in the freezer too long. The texture was good, not rubbery or overcooked. A wedge of lemon would help eliminate the fishiness. The mashed potatoes were a little runny, but had a nice flavor. The brocollini was cooked properly, but the carrots could have been cooked a little longer as they were rather hard. Rating: 3.5/5 12 oz. Certified Angus Beef Ribeye ($26) seemed to be priced a little high for its size. The steak looked great with cross-hatched grill marks, but it was unevenly cooked. Half of the steak was cooked rare and the other half was well done. The seasoning on the outside made the steak very flavorful. Even at well done, the steak was pretty tender. The twice baked potato that accompanied it was fantastic! The textures of creamy mashed potatoes, gooey cheese, and crispy potato skin worked wonders. The other vegetables were just like the special, not cooked evenly. Rating: 3.5/5
