School History: Curry Elementary opened in 1969. It is named for native Tempe resident John J. Curry. John served Tempe’s volunteer fire department for 50 years, was deputy director of the County Works Project Administration, and was a city councilman for eight years. He was also a member of the city of Tempe Building Corporation and was on the city’s first Planning and Zoning Commission. He helped build educational buildings as a WPA administrator during the Great Depression.
