Story

Devil's Lake State Park is a state park located in the Baraboo Range in eastern Sauk County, just south of Baraboo, Wisconsin. Devil's Lake State Park is the biggest state park in Wisconsin. It is around thirty-five miles northwest of Madison, and is on the western edge of the last ice-sheet deposited during the Wisconsin drift. This 9217acre state park is known for its 500ft quartzite bluffs along the 360acre Devil's Lake, which was created by a glacier depositing terminal moraines that plugged the north and south ends of the gap in the bluffs during the last ice age approximately 12,000 years ago. The sand at the bottom of Devil's Lake is thought to be deposited by glaciers. Devil's Lake is situated in the Baraboo Hills. The Baraboo Hills are thought to be much older than Devil's Lake itself; they are approximately 1.6 billion years old and were once part of the Baraboo Range which is thought to have been taller than the Rocky Mountains. In 1974, the National Park Service declared the Southern portion of the Baraboo Hills a National Natural Landmark. The Nature Conservancy also designated it as one of the Last Great Places; it is one of only 77 of these places in the world. Loess covers most of the hills and forms the parent material of a brown silt loam soil. During the fall, the park's brilliant foliage makes it a popular attraction. The lake is surrounded by a mixed conifer-deciduous forest and the Baraboo Hills are also home to one of the largest contiguous hardwood forests in the Midwest. Its scenic beauty along with its proximity to the Wisconsin Dells has made it one of the most popular of Wisconsin's state parks for both day use and overnight camping; the park receives over 1.2 million visitors annually.

Easily one of my favorite state parks. I love that it is so dog friendly, all the trails are well marked and they have so much to explore. It's the perfect day trip. The Loop are the lake takes about 4 hours, but there are lots of places to stop and eat lunch and enjoy the views. I do recommend getting there early, as it is popular and the parking fills up quickly.

Beautiful views with plenty to do. Hiking trails reveal beautiful views of the lake, the bluffs, and woods. Trails are a bit of a challenge for the average person so be prepared with water and proper shoes. The trails up the hill have stone stairs that you need to be cautious about. The lake is beautiful and they have boat rentals that are convenient and not very expensive. $100 dollar deposit required for rentals. They take cards.

This is a favorite family destination of ours great for hiking the water is beautiful for swimming and canoeing always a lot of people but plenty of room to keep you spaced out. Tent sites are large bathrooms are extremely rustic in the majority of the park. But that's what keeps it a state park. Beautiful scenery

The view from top is awesome, specially during fall and spring. The steps from south point of lake to devil's doorway are steep and not easy. Better follow the trail from north to south. I saw kids/people going off the trail and getting in some accident where rocks came sliding towards them. So better to stay on trails specially around rocks.

This is one of the most amazing places to go if you like hiking. The closest thing that comes to mind is it is much like hiking in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The views are amazing especially during the fall when the colors start to change. If you are planning on camping, I highly suggest you make reservations online in advance and try to get a site in the 400's.
