Diefenbunker, Canada's Cold War Museum

About

The Diefenbunker is a 100,000 sq ft, underground emergency bunker that was built just in case Canada suffered a nuclear attack during the Cold War.

Story

For 32 years it protected us from 75 feet underground and we knew virtually nothing about it. Today the Diefenbunker has shed its veil of secrecy to become so much more than a Cold War museum.
It is a reminder of how close we came to a nuclear disaster in 1962, it is a community hub like no other, and it is a physical reminder of a powerful Canadian value: the importance of peaceful conflict resolution as part of a democratic society. There is no other museum like the Diefenbunker.

This is the most extraordinary testament to cold war hysteria. Each room is a time capsule with equipment and literature from the 1960s. A guided tour is a good option if it is your first visit-- you will learn very interesting details about the construction of the building. But definitely set aside some time to wander on your own. It is like being on the set of a creepy post nuclear apocalypse dystopian movie. And it is rad. Gentle warning that I have done this your with someone who had anxiety and it proved to be a very unpleasant experience for them.

A fascinating reminder of my childhood during the Cold War, and why my parents were tense about things I couldn't properly understand yet. Lovingly recreates an era that hopefully my children won't have to worry about, but those who forget history are condemned to repeat it, so I'm very grateful to the dedicated local volunteers who rescued the establishment from demolition many years ago. I have wanted to visit for a long time, and finally got the chance today. I arrived well before a scheduled guided tour, and took the self-guided audio/video tour with a small iPod. Not as good as I suspect the guided tour would have been, but much superior to walking around aimlessly reading signs on the way. If I am able to get back, I'll take the guided tour, and linger a little longer in the display rooms. Allow a couple of hours if you can. Kudos to all involved: the staff were friendly and very knowledgeable. I'm very happy I finally got here.

One of my favorite place. I have been here 5 times. Great history. Nice radio room. I wish a radio room would be set up for ham radio operators. Where is the new bunker for the prime minister?

Maybe one of the most under rated museums in the Ottawa area. They've done a good job of making the entire thing interesting and not overwhelming. Certainly don't rush it. If you're claustrophobic you might want to reconsider. Wouldn't rake my 7 year old nephew here but for sure the 10 year old.

Nice view of cold war artifacts. There were a variety of things you could see, for example a 1960's operating room, old computers, radios and other related items from the era. The staff were knowledgeable and small things like stickers/dots on the floor made it easier to navigate around a bunker where rooms and levels looked confusingly similar.
