Story

Owner of Dreadz N’ Headz Natural Hair Care Center. A native of Baltimore and a Natural Hair Care Master/Entrepreneur Advocate. Winner of the National Golden Scissors award for three (3) consecutive years. She is affectionately known by many as the “LOC MAMA”.

Founder of the Baltimore Natural Hair Care Expose, Poets N’ The Park/Happy Nappy Day held annually, Malaika has served a plethora of clients that include people and places in Paris, French West Indies and Tunisia (North Africa). She has taught and empowered many women locally and across the Diaspora. Through her quintessential motivation, many of these women are now proud business owners in the natural hair c are industry.

She states “it has always been my ministry to educate people about their natural hair, its beauty, significance, and bring them back to their natural states; mind, body and soul”. Ultimately, empowering people to become entrepreneurs. Her passion is giving opportunities to our young black woman who may not fit into Corporate America and equip them with lifelong skills. Enabling them to be independent and self sufficient. She continues to touch the lives of many not only in the industry but personally as well. Remembering home … where it all began. If it is Gods’ will it is Malaika’s way!

Malaika has over 20 years of professional natural hair care expertise. Dedicated to learning and teaching innovative techniques for natural hair, she has developed several natural hair care techniques to help sistah’s and brotha’s nurture and restore their hair to its natural state. She has her own line of bath and body scrubs, non-itch hair formulas as well as natural hair pomades.
She has reached judge status and has judged 90% of the natural hair care event competitions across the country and internationally. Her clientele includes but not limited to, recording artist Wyclef Jean, baseball player Manny Ramirez, Maryland’s’ Congressmen/woman, members of City Council and a host of local artists.

Okay, I really hate doing this. I want to first say the owner was very sweet and so were the employees.. However, few problems. My friend and I are Caucasians with "straight hair". She used the crochet method, which is what I wanted so we started off great.. We went the first time to get some installations. She charged us way way too much for just 3 dreads (50$ for 20 min of work!!) but since this was our first experience and we didn't really know better, we went with it. She told us to wrap our dreads to keep them tight, (plus we wanted some color) so we did... We went back the next week for more installations and same thing, we payed WAY WAY too much. We also left with terribly loose dreads- so I personally wrapped them because 1- she charged us too much the first time for a wrap and 2- we desperately needed the hair tightened and contained.. I was able to stick my fist in my friends root because it was that loose!! She also used interlocking which is a BIG no no for dreads according to all the research we did following our visits. The second time, I asked for "thicker" dreads than the first time and she made them so thick they were about a half inch BEFORE swelling up (which they will in time!). Within 3 days of leaving the salon, both of our heads were a mess. Basically, we had to contact a different agency (after spending 100$ here for 6 dreads) that was able to do Caucasian hair and thankfully they fixed the roots and tightened the locks. The difference is insane. I will say, her work on African hair looks AMAZING. Customers seemed very happy, and everyone left looking beautiful... perhaps the problem is with Caucasian hair =)

I was very satisfied with my service .. I definitely will be a frequent customer, ANNA did my maintenance. Everyone was pleasant and make you feel welcomed. 5 stars!!!!

The service from Toya was great. Malaika knows her stuff about natural hair. I was happy with the my hair. I will go there again.

I was extremely disappointed with my experience at my DreadsNHeadz. I walked in at 8:40 a.m. and was welcomed by a friendly young lady who informed me that she had two heads that she was working on and that i could go head and get breakfast to eat while I waited. I opted out in order not to lose my place , an she asked me what i would wanted done .I informed her that i wanted my hair colored. I waited for 30 minutes until another young lady walked in and beckoned me to the sink. She told me that I would have needed to bring my own color if i wanted my hair colored. Which i thought was strange considered that color, highlights, as well as other color related services were on their website pricing list, and it didn't say on the site or in the store that it would be required to bring it. She told me that they only kept black in the shop to touch up people's roots. I left and went to the hair store, and got three boxes of color closest to the color that i wanted, as she stated. Considering I know nothing about color it took me a minute. I came back to the salon, and she put two of the three boxes of color in my hair & unfortunately the color looked nothing like the picture on the box. So I asked her if she had bleached my hair. She said no, she didn't like using bleach. But considering the picture i had shown her was a lot lighter than my hair , it would have only made sense to bleach it. She said that the options that we had were to use the third box of color, and it may turn out brighter, or we could go get another color and she would help me pick out what would be closest to the look that i wanted. We got in MY car, and went to a hair store near by, where she tried to exchange my color. But because it wasn't the hair store that I went to originally ( which she was aware of) they wouldn't take it. We then proceeded to go back to the original hair store where I purchased my dye. The stylist picked out a honey blonde dye and a paprika temporary rinse. The cashier said they don't take exchanges, but would make an exception for us. Which probably had something to do with the fact that I had a plastic cap on my wet barely colored head in 17 degree weather.. We got back to the salon and she put in the honey blonde, which ended up turning the tips of my hair green, she suggested that if we had the temporary rinse , it would cover it.Which to me no no sense long term because once the rinse wear's off then what ? At this point its 2:00 and i'm just ready to go home. She ends up rinsing my hair, and it turns my hair a color that looks nothing like what I asked for. After being there from 8:40 a.m. to 4:35 p.m. I was charged full price , no apology for the inconvenience , and was offered a 50% coupon for my next visit. After taking a look at my hair when I got home, and still being able to see my own hair color along with three other colors, as well as talking to a stylist who specialized in dye , and talking about the potential damage this may have caused. It is safe to safe I will not be returning to this place. Don't get me wrong. I watched several women and men walk in and out of this salon with their hair looking immaculate. The woman in this shop are talented and can get heads in an out. But considering this was my first experience at this salon, and my first experience dying my locks, the result of my hair color and the lack of professionalism within my own experience was enough to make me not wanted to return.
