Reading all the reviews here I expected a lot of rude staff and unpleasant experience, however to my surprise the front desk lady was so kind and polite that i was waiting for something bad to happen but nothing...on the contrary, the staff was so accomodating to other applicants ex., they would suggest an alternate document in case they cant come up with the one mentioned on website. And after observing lot of people there following were my observations 1) Naturalized united states citizens - they walk in and stick to the front desk trying to seem everything urgent 2) US citizens arguing with front desk staff saying they don't want to get photocopies rather they want consulate to take the copies I was just astonished how people were walking all over the staff because they think it being indian embassy they can do whatever they want. However I was equally suprised with the calmness and politness from indian staff, hence the rating As a final note I want to say that an indian would never even dream to behave like that in an united states embassy/consulate because candidates are not even allowed to talk and just follow process and yes sir, US visas do get REJECTED without no reason and no sir no one in consulates even bother to give a reason. I myself been through 2 student visas and one work permit to give you a perspective. After studying through university and working for corporate america for over a decade I always had a very high respect to the crowd. However now I do believe there are always exceptions and I guess I have seen them in the consulate and in the reviews here. Again I am not generalizing but after seeing reviews here I thought to provide an honest snapshot.

I’m struggling to articulate my feelings in a way that is precise and, above all, fair in my criticism of the visa request/application and how it is managed by CKGS. My father, who lived in India, suddenly passed away. He’d shown improvement so I stopped fussing with the cumbersome online process and thought I could go in directly to CKGS first thing Monday morning. (A note on the website: it seems like a very old site, very bulky, and it didn’t look trustworthy or secure or modern, for that matter.) Unfortunately, things took a very unexpected turn during the weekend, and given the customs, there was no way I could’ve arrive in time. I wish to be clear: I don’t place any blame directly on CKGS or the Indian Embassy. The rules and process have been in place for a very long time, and people obtain visas all the time, and it seems to work for people. I should have done a recent review before assuming it would be as simple as replacing my passport or driver’s license, or requesting my birth certificate. However, I do think it’s fair for me to ask that the Indian Embassy consider encouraging or incentivizing CKGS to update the online website/visa application so it looks less like a fake site set up by cyber-criminals w/bad intentions. I no longer have close relatives left in India, and no reason to return. I doubt this will be an issue for me in the future. However, I do hope there is some thought given to what seems to be a common complaint.

imagine how poorly this place is doing that they have to hire a third party to do their job..and then they take forever to issue a visa, its not like they are actually doing any paperwork. Then you dont get to know if you got the visa or not until your passport arrives and dont even mind asking them because they cant tell you since is a surprise.....yeeeeh!!

Very disappointing service, it's been over a month that visa application was put in. No one provides an update on the status, several emails and phone calls to the embassy with no response. SIMPLY AWFUL customer service. Update: Going on 3 months, still no visa but changing this rating to 2 stars as Mr. Mishra from the Embassy is now helping with this process.

The Services Offered by the outsourced outfit CKGS to the Indian Visa/OCI document applicants in the US is shabby at best The customer support team will have to be trained on the basic tenets of Customer Service, let alone the process of screening the applications and documents to the real merit of the situation. These folks seem to drag/sit on the applications asking for one document after another (mostly irrelevant to the case) in a piece meal fashion there by eating up time and causing hardship to the applicants. Wonder if this outfit is billing the Government of India (Ministry of External Affairs / Indian Embassy in Washington DC) for the time they are wasting on each application to keep their business alive.. The purpose of outsourcing any business operation is for the following two objectives: 1. To reduce the cost (in this case, the customers are not getting any benefit, as the Visa/OCI application fees are much higher than it used to be when the Indian Consulates in the US used to handle these services directly without any 3rd party support.) 2. To improve operational Efficiency ( The application approval - aka 'blessing' by the CKGS bean counters-process has become nightmarish for the public. The San Francisco CKGS support team in particular has been very sloppy and unresponsive to customers concerns, delaying the application approval for one reason or other asking for additional documents that has no relevance to the applicant's case on a piecemeal fashion, thereby dragging on the process, if not rejecting the applications outright for silly reasons. This is beyond any sane person's comprehension. ) The website to submit the online application is poorly designed. In many tabs, where the names of the applicant, spouse, father, mother etc are to be entered, there is no provision to include the middle name or middle initial. The applicant (if he/she is born in the US ) will usually have a middle name (or initial) that is not appended to the 1st name as the CKGS folks suggest or think. An applicant applying for an OCI on the merit of his/her mother's or father's Indian nationality is being asked to provide his/her marriage certificate, spouses' personal details etc.. which are irrelevant. Wonder these folks will be asking for the divorce documents as well, in case of an applicant had an earlier marriage! There has been cases of applications being rejected outright for not including (appending) the Middle Name /initial of spouse or parent in the First Name! Someone needs to bring this sloppy set up to the attention of the highest available authority in Indian Government (US Embassies, Ministry of External Affairs or even the PM of India).. This is a shame..
