the pizza is legit. detroit style pizza with an amazing crust. on par with parma in thousand oaks for detroit style. this is the new in-house food at santa monica brew works and the food is ridiculously good. i mean, you can come here for the pizza and the beer as a bonus. can’t say that about most breweries and their in-house food. i had the colony as is and the sauce is great and the honey in the crust is super flavorful. not cheap BUT it has six slices which will fill up a big eater or two normal eaters. they have an extensive menu which includes burgers and a nashville chicken sandwich. will try those after i get through the pizzas. try it. legit.
VEGAN POST: It’s a shame that this place has so many low reviews since those reviews really boil down to price. Yes, it’s expensive for the quantity. 6 slices of Detroit style in LA for $25-30 when you could get 3-4x as much food in ACTUAL Detroit hurts the souls of us midwesterners. But west coast vegans are no strangers to price premiums. The Larry pizza is one of the tastiest vegan pizzas I’ve had anywhere, let alone in a godless vegan place called Santa Monica. If you’re vegan or at minimum dairy-free, and you like Detroit style over others looking at you Chicago casserole!, then treat yourself to this. Pay more, have some beer next door, and think about Midwest summers.
Solid Detroit styled pizza in Santa Monica. Just when I was thinking LA doesn’t do good Detroit style, emmy squared proves me wrong. The crust is thick but light. Burnt slight char on the edges with a buttery doughy texture. Ingredients felt higher quality and toppings were adequate. A solid offering in the area. Not as stellar as Square Pie Guys in the Bay Area but respectable for a celebrated NY chain. We tried 3: Margherita was our favorite, tomato sauce that wasn’t sweet unlike joes NY pizza, cheese that was ample and in the crust too, and enough basil to go around. You get around 6 square slices and it tastes better the next day. Umami. Roni overload was solid and the meat eaters loved it. They said it had enough pepperoni and flavor for them to keep going back for more. Deeply satisfying. Vegan caramelized onion and garlic confit was an interesting attempt that may need finessing. Since it doesn’t come with sauce, it has to work harder. The vegan cheese was decent but it lacked a dimension of flavor compared to the others. Perhaps the least successful of the 3 but has a lot of potential with some flavor development. We also tried the impossible meat balls that didn’t deliver well. And a side of mushrooms for the baby who seemed to like it. Overall a solid Detroit styled pizza place that is sure to satisfy all your pizza cravings. Delivered well.
The pizza is good Detroit style pizza for LA way better than Dtown pizzeria which doesn't know how to control salt on pizza. I would definitely come again but is definitely no Buddy's or Jets pizza. But when I want Detroit style pizza this suffices.
This is the best Detroit style pizza in town. The sauce is generously served on top, a nice balance of sweet and salty. The burrata was layered using a good ratio: one burrata chunk per slice. A fresh basil leaf garnished the very top. The pizza can get sloppy, and I recommend you prepare for this. Sauce 5/5 and Cheese 5/5 The crust is an experience: the bottom side has a nice toast, the middle is fluffy, and the edges are crispy and crunchy. Crust 5/5 The price is on the higher end $25. I think two poeple could split one pizza, especially if you are having brews at Santa Monica Brew Works.
While I am glad to see Emmy finally make out west considering they went all the way to Saudi Arabia first, I find the execution a bit dismaying in comparison to their east coast counterparts. It's a bit counter to the brand you've built to serve your $25-$30 uniquely sized i.e. small pizzas and sandwiches out of a takeaway counter situated inside a separate brewery business in generic pizza boxes and on paper plates with plastic utensils. For those same prices I can go to your NY locations and get a full service experience with a full bar. And I have several times. I brought people along who had never been, and from my standpoint still haven't. Disappointing...
Read the good reviews and went to check it out. It's okay if you're going for the Brewery, but would not recommend going specifically for the pizza. Mediocre Detroit style Pizza + garlic bread for two ppl cost $50 and felt overpriced.
Emmy Squared is a national chain; their pizza prices in other cities are much, much cheaper than the overpriced $30+ pizzas at this Santa Monica location. I just ate at the Nashville location, and the most expensive pizza was only $16. Definitely avoid this location!
The thing I missed most moving to LA is decent pizza, which is few and far between here. It's amazing to have the best pizza in NY finally come here. If you've never tried Emmy's, you're in for a treat.
I had the spicy chicken sandwich there and my friends ordered the pizza. First of all definitely way overpriced for what the food actually is. My chicken sandwich with fries costed me $33. Then it was so greasy there was a puddle of fat underneath the sandwich. I should have known better not to eat it. Made me sick and I ended up throwing up. According to friends pizza was decent but not worth the price.
