Story

The Florida Holocaust Museum honors the memory the millions of men, women and children who suffered or died in the Holocaust. The Museum is dedicated to teaching members of all races and cultures the inherent worth and dignity of human life in order to prevent future genocides.

One of the largest Holocaust museums in the country, the Florida Holocaust Museum is the result of St. Petersburg businessman and philanthropist Walter P. Loebenberg’s remarkable journey and vision. Loebenberg escaped Nazi Germany in 1939 and served in the United States Army during World War II. Together with a group of local businessmen and community leaders, the concept of a living memorial to those who suffered and perished was conceived.

Among the participating individuals were Survivors of the Holocaust and individuals who lost relatives, as well as those who had no personal investment, other than wanting to ensure that such atrocities could never again happen to any group of people.

The group enlisted the support of others in the community and were able to involve internationally renowned Holocaust scholars. Thomas Keneally, author of Schindler’s List, joined the Board of Advisors and Elie Wiesel was named Honorary Chairman.

The Museum played a critical role in shaping legislation that in 1994 made Florida one of the first states in the nation to mandate Holocaust education in public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Museum and the Pinellas County School System worked together to create guidelines for K-12 teachers. The guidelines include grade-appropriate instructional goals and bibliography for teaching the Holocaust. These guidelines are used by teachers throughout the nation as well as in Florida.

We stayed for quite some time and learned so much. This is a very informative museum and you could easily spend a couple of hours here. There's visual and audio components. The staff is friendly. It's worth the admission.

This was a highly moving exhibit of mans inhumanity to other human beings. The people who endured this suffering must never be forgotten. They endured undue suffering. No one should miss this exhibit. It is very well written and shows some very good artifacts. Hope you do not miss it. Very moving.

This is a great learning experience for adults or children. They do an excellent job of putting tons of information into the museum as well as artifacts. Also having speciality exhibits. The staff is also very friendly and appreciative. Good prices as well.

Just left from there! Really nice audio tour! Staff was nice and they had a lot of memorabilia of the Holocaust there. It's pretty small, but fits a lot of knowledge in there. You'll spend about 20 minutes here. College students discounts are welcome here too!

The museum was very enlightening. Having been born in the 50-ies, very eye opening what humans do to other humans, the USA to the Indians, Syria to its people etc.
