Love Historical sites. This place was a really wonderful place to spend the day. Stopped in during our vacation and the staff was very friendly and courteous. They even allowed us to bring our dog in and take a self guided tour with him.

This was a fun place to see. Many dark and hidden corners. Using your imagination, you can well picture what life would have been like for the soldiers stationed there. Be sure to include an extra hour to go to the top of the Panopscot Bridge tower.

Are you a history buff visiting coastal Maine? Are you finding all the coastal hiking, and lobster eating a bit tedious? Do you find yourself pining for something more? Well, this is the place for you! It's a wicked old fort by Maine standards and it has all the things an old fort should such as creepy dark corridors, massive cannons, and good view points of the nearby river. I highly recommend a visit to this landmark!

Fort Knox, now Fort Knox State Park or Fort Knox State Historic Site, is located on the western bank of the Penobscot River in the town of Prospect, Maine, about 5 miles (8.0 km) from the mouth of the river. Built between 1844 and 1869, it was the first fort in Maine built entirely of granite; most previous forts used wood, earth, and stone. It is named after Major General Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War and Commander of Artillery during the American Revolutionary War, who at the end of his life lived not far away in Thomaston. As a virtually intact example of a mid-19th century granite coastal fortification, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969 and declared a National Historic Landmark on December 30, 1970. Fort Knox also serves as the entry site for the observation tower of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge that opened to the public in 2007

Awesome place to go! Such a cool historic site. The Halloween event is great, they clearly put a lot of work into it. The bridge is beautiful and Bucksport is right across it with plenty of good restaurants. You can check out the "foot" on the grave too!
