Arrived late in the day, self check in was the way to go. Gravel was hard to plant tent into but what else is new in the desert. If you are someone who car camps this campsite is cool but feels geared towards RVs. Lots of big guys with big RVs running their "mood lights" all night. "Tent sites" are cheaper but there are very few and centrally located. Outskirt sites are the much better ones. Cute as all heck concrete tables at most of the sites and literally every side has a saguaro on or near it. You will be sleeping beside a cactus mark my words. No showers but toilets were clean. Easy access to water. Nice trails near by and duh, Saguaro NP. The roads out there are WILD and hilly. People rip around on them. Woke up a few times to the sound of people just giving it on the surrounding state park roads and to the sound of the Air Force jets.

Great campground to stay as a base camp for exploring Saguaro NP and the area. Large enough for any camper - from tent to big RV, affordable (tent spot = 10 $), not too crowded. Water is available at pumps; water-flushed toilets, but no showers. Beautiful surroundings of saguaro and other desert plants.

The staff and volunteers are very helpful and accommodating. No reservation policy is a pain, though. I understand that we are in the desert, but there is no excuse for keeping the plethora of chola cactus in the campsites, that attack humans, children and dogs. I also do not understand why dogs are not permitted anywhere in Tucson Mountain Park except in the campground. They need to have an off leash dog park. We won't be back.

I was meeting friends at The Gilbert Ray Campground which is advertised as a first come first served campground. (Which means pick any open spot) Upon arrival my friend advises me he picked a spot set up his whole rig went to the office to pay and the campground host told him his rig wasn't big enough for that spot. When he refused to change spots she called the Sheriffs Dept. .So for clarification I went to the office and asked is this a first come first served campground and was told yes! I returned to my friends campsite and waited for the deputy. When the 3 Deputies, yes 3 Deputies arrived they heard my friends story and went back to the office. When they returned they told my friend he had to move. So as an Retired Deputy myself, this is the case of camphost with an attitude who did not care about the rules or her campers. The worst thing is she uses the Sheriffs. Office to to handle a dispute she instigated against the written rules of the park. I only hope no one in the county needed help from these 1 2 3 Deputies while they answered this ridiculous call from such a horribly spiteful little woman.

This is a great country park where you can drive through the desert and mountains to view saguara and other cactus. There are many trails for hiking and biking.. pets are allowed on the trails with a leash. It is 30 amp only and first come first serve. It is a wonderful campground. There are restrooms but no showers.
