Grand Rapids Station

Story

The Vernon J. Ehlers Station is a train station in Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States served by Amtrak, the U.S. national railroad passenger system. The station is the terminus of the Pere Marquette line that connects Chicago's Union Station to Grand Rapids. It opened at its new location on Century Avenue under the Wealthy Street/US-131 overpass, immediately south of The Rapid's Central Station. The new central location allows easy connections to twenty local Rapid buses as well as Greyhound and Indian Trails intercity services. No plans have been announced yet to move Megabus services from their location opposite the old Amtrak station at Wealthy/Market to complete the multimodal transit hub.HistoryThe previous Amtrak station opened in 1984 at the corner of Wealthy Street and Market Avenue in downtown Grand Rapids. In October 2011, groundbreaking occurred on the new station. It is named in honor of former Michigan Congressman Vern Ehlers. The new station enables fully intermodal transit while allowing for more efficient train turnarounds. It was funded by a US$3.8 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration and $850,000 from the City of Grand Rapids. Due to delays in construction from CSX and the City of Grand Rapids, the station construction started in the summer of 2013. The new station opened on October 27, 2014.

Not to happy with Amtrak honestly. First ride I took my attendant was very rude. When I asked for blankets he reached over me and threw them on my lap. I do expect a little respect and quality since I paid for a sleeper car and had my 3 month old. Again rode with my fiance and my son who was 6 months and Chicago staff was rude. Attendant was much better thank God. I wish I knew the gentleman's name but he was amazing! My only problem is my bf left his phone in the train in our sleeper car. 2 months later Amtrak calls me stating they found my debit card ( honestly didn't know it was missing) but no phone. I truly believe someone stole it and all I got was attitude from some lady on the phone in tomah.. thinking if I'm going to be treated so bad I'm just going to drive from now on..

Some of the reviews listed are not even for the Grand Rapids Station. The Grand Rapids Station is service by The Rapid as far as snow clearing. Another person talked about rude employees. There is only one. This person is to keep dorway clear of passengers standing in the way. They are also there to make sure those with business class and families board first. In my last use of ststion there were several people who did not listen or follow the instructions of the station person. The train crew does not communicate with passengers in the station. The station is clean and well lit. Since there is one train daily once gone there is no need to keep station lit. It is nice that The Rapid does not use stayion as a shrine to former US Rep Vern Ehlets. The thing I miss are the historic photos of railroadings past in Grand Rapids area. Another person complained about their experience with sleeping car. There are no trains that use Grand Rapids that have sleeping car accomidations. This is a new station and it is better then old. Well lit, ample free parking, and very clean. Please follow direction of station personnel as well as train crew and you will have a pleasant journey.

I leave from this station a few times a year and have always had a great experience. The station in GR is very clean and well lit, the staff are professional and friendly and taking the train beats the stress of flying hands down .

I only arrived here once late at night but I still give it 5 stars. The abandoned buildings didn't bother me as much as other reviewers stated because it was well lit and the people there were all cool. Furthermore, this station is in Grand Rapids Michigan...If you don't know, it's a safe and great city. It's a super clean station that's well lit at night.
