Story

Granite City Food & Brewery®, a casual dining restaurant with an on-site brewery. Our initial restaurant commenced operations in St. Cloud, Minnesota, in June 1999. Our second restaurant, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, commenced operations in December 2000, and our third restaurant opened to the public November 20, 2001 in Fargo, North Dakota. We now have 26 stores operating in 11 different states. At Granite City Food & Brewery®, we serve signature beers, including Duke of Wellington (an English ale) and Broad Axe Stout (an authentic Irish beer), and entrees such as London broil. We offer a broad menu of items that are prepared fresh daily and are served in generous portions at reasonable prices. Our handcrafted beers are moderately priced and offer unique styles and flavors not typically produced by major breweries.

Our founders, Mr. Wagenheim and Mr. Burdick, have over 52 years of combined hospitality industry experience. Mr. Wagenheim's experience includes that of corporate executive, owner/operator, manager and consultant for hotels, resorts, and individual and multi-unit restaurant operations. Mr. Burdick, a brewing chemist, has over 30 years experience in the restaurant, hospitality and brewing industry in both corporate and private positions.

Fermentus Interruptus™Shortly before we opened our third store, we launched our patented brewing process, Fermentus Interruptus™, which makes micro brewing for multiple locations more efficient. This process, conceived and designed by Mr. Burdick, allows us to ship sweet liquid called wort, from our central brewing facility to individual stores. When this liquid reaches the stores, we begin the fermentation process and complete the brewing. We use Fermentus Interruptus at all of our Granite City Food & Brewery® locations.

Delicious burgers. Definitely better than expected. The staff were friendly, and both the bar and restaurant were clean and comfortable. The beer selection is pretty bland for a brewery. Of the 12 beers on the menu, two were blended beers, which probably says enough. The best beer was the seasonal Ukelele, an IPA with enough flavour to distinguish itself over the other options we tried: the heffe, an APA and one of the two blends mentioned above. Once again, the burgers were delicious.

We went to Granite City in the Mall in Cherry Valley, Illinois for Easter Brunch, great food and really nice setting. My daughter is on a Plant Based diet that is very strict and we couldn't find many options for her, feeling guilty I told the manager and she came to the table and asked her about the diet and provided her with an Amazing meal!!!! I am sorry I didn't get her name, but it made the day so special for us, knowing my daughter could enjoy the meal as much as we did. THANK YOU to our Granite City.

Last time here, it was about 7 years ago. The waiting line for dinner on a Saturday night went out into the parking lot because they couldn't hold anymore people inside. And the wait time was forever. Every table was packed, the bar area was full, and it was super loud. You could barely hear the person/people sitting with you. And don't be in a rush to get out either. Now zoom from 2010 to 2017. I made reservations online because I wanted to avoid that chaos. Well imagine my surprise when I pulled into the parking lot. Tons of open parking spaces. No line out the front door. No hoards of people like sardines inside. Immediate seating even without a reservation. Walked up the stairs into the dining area. Where is everyone? Sat down at a booth - I think the same one as last time 7 years ago. Ordered a dark beer flight. It's comes with a special light one. Hmmm. And of course, didn't care for it. When I asked for City Chips (didn't see them on the menu), the waiter first replied Huh? Then said, oh yeah, heard of them but they haven't been around in about 3 years. Well ok. Only 3 steaks on the menu. Could have sworn there used to be more but ok. My bleu burger was good. Still had the bison burger on the menu. The horseradish mashed potatoes were awesome. And really only liked the stout from my flight. I'll remember that for my next trip there - if there is one. Not sure what's happened in 7 years - maybe surrounding competition, change in ownership/management, their newness has worn off but I'll have to think about it next time before I go back.
