Harvard, as you might expect, has an excellent collection. As you might not expect, the museum is largely quite up to date and very informative, and even a pretty good place for kids (if they can be somewhat calm and if you either don't have a stroller, or don't mind going around). It's well worth a visit, especially if you are an MA resident and know when to get in for free (hint: check the website).

Such a fun place to visit. It isn't huge so you can see the whole place in one day. Incredible exibits of woodland creatures, sea creatures, bugs, bees, not to mention the rhinos, giraffe and ant eater! Inexpensive but such a gem!

One of my favorite places to take the kids. They're able to fit a lot into a small space, including some enormous whale and dinosaur bones. Check them out on Wednesday after 3 or Sunday between 9 and 12 when they're free.

A medium-sized museum with extensive collections of animal and plant fossils, specimens, mineral stones, and one of the most impressive exhibitions I've ever seen: life-like glass flowers. The place is very family-friendly with many directions and interactive activities dedicated to young kids. The museum is also connected with the Peabody museum which showcases exhibitions about native culture, ancient weapons, etc. A great choice of destination for a family weekend.
