Story

The Islamic Cultural Center of New York is a mosque and Islamic cultural center in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, United States. It is located at 1711 Third Avenue, between East 96th and 97th Streets. The Islamic Cultural Center was the first mosque built in New York City. The mosque's older dwelling in a townhouse at 1 Riverside Drive, is still in continual prayer use as a satellite location.Design and historyPlans for a large Islamic center in New York were originally drawn up in the late 1960s as the first cultural center occupied a location at 1 Riverside Drive by 72nd Street. The first Islamic Center started functioning on a small scale from a modest townhouse at that address. However, the board of trustees later aspired to build a new larger center in a way suiting its prestigious position in the community, and to be one of the landmarks of New York City. Later, an overall project comprising a mosque, a school, a library, a museum, and a lecture hall, were planned out. After years of delays which included raising funds from Muslim countries, a prolonged process of relocating tenants, and the eventual demolition of the buildings on the site; construction of the Islamic Cultural Center began in October 1984. Construction of the associated mosque began on May 28, 1987, the day which corresponded to the end of Ramadan. The cornerstone of the minaret was laid on September 26, 1988.

It's a piece of art. Friday lectures is in English. If you go right before the street cleaning time finish you can find a parking spot easy otherwise there are plenary of parking meter or parking spots if you drive around the blocks nearby. Eid prayer is special as the beautiful city of NY assign police officers to close the street where the rear entrance for Muslins to park their cars. There are subway stations nearby as well. Jumaa/Friday prayer is always at 1:00 pm no matter it's a summer or winter time and doesn't take more than 35 to 40 minutes including the prayer. ------ Friday street cleaning :- * you have between 3rd Ave and park Ave, street cleaning finishes at 11:30 am, so if you are there at 11:00 you can get a spot or * between 2nd Ave and 1st Ave street cleaning ends at 1:00 pm, so if you get there 12:30/12:45 you can get a spot or park on a meter on 2nd Ave where the bus lane restriction starts at 2:00pm... plenty of options.

Al hamdu lillah, I've had many opportunities to pray Salatu Jumu'ah Services in the early 90s through 03 and have visited on other occasions, with the many Muslims who I found (if not all) many are warm and friendly, even during Ramadhan... Now I'm in Columbia SC USA, attending the the Islamic Center of Columbia, with our imam Shaikh Muhammad Adly, may Allah bestow His blessings on us ameen.

I loved this masjid. I've been to a few and there was no one like this. It is simple and spacious. The amount of prayers made by huge traffic each day is countless and it feels in the air. No doubt it is a sacred place. I was so empowered and content and it made me strong within just having spent an hour and a half in salat and sudjut.

So I was traveling in NYC, and it was time for Jummah prayers, I thought let's read naamaz here. Unfortunately, I got late and missed the jamaa't. However, I loved this place. The first floor section is so amazing, you could sit there all day and read the Qura'n. Also a great place to socialize with the Muslims in NYC especially Pakistani Muslims. May Allah bless all Muslims, Jazakallah khairun.
