Jackson County Airport (24A) is a small public airfield located in western North Carolina.
Jackson County Airport is the community airport of Jackson County North Carolina. Open to the public to enjoy during daylight hours. Non-flying public are also welcome to enjoy the magnificent views and participate in aviation events and activities at the airport. General aviation flight training is available for anyone interested in learning how to fly. Occasional astronomy demonstrations, airport open-houses and fly-in events are also held at our airport. The local chapter of youth Civil Air Patrol is also located at the Jackson County Airport.
The airport FAA ID is 24A and is a small public airfield situated on Berry Ridge about three miles (5 km) southeast of the town of Sylva, the county seat of Jackson County, North Carolina. It is also less than 1 mile west of the unincorporated town of Cullowhee, the home of Western Carolina University.
The airport part of Jackson County's infrastructure, operated and governed by the Jackson County Airport Authority. It sits at an elevation of 2,857 feet (870 meters) and covers an area of 147 acres.
The airport's traffic consists mostly of light single and twin engine fixed-wing private aircraft. Additional air traffic consists of occasional helicopter flights, military and search & rescue training exercises, local emergency services, and commercial air taxi service. Flight lessons are available for student pilots.
The annual "Western Carolina Regional Fly-In and Family Fun Day", sponsored by the Smoky Mountain Flying Club is held in October at the Jackson County Airport and attracts residents and visitors of all ages. Children are invited to go up in a plane for a free ride.
