The landlord is a great person, everyone who works under her on the other hand will treat you like you are an idiot and won't do anything to help you.  Renting an apartment near the office is probably fine, if you don't mind paying the outrageous prices for them.  If you rent a house, expect there to be issues that will go unfixed. Expect high heating and cooling costs because the houses are basically uninsulated and the HVAC systems are from the 60s/70's.  Your grass and snow will get taken care of when it REALLY looks like it needs it.  I'm glad to be out of kriksville.
