Kirkwood Mountain Resort

About 35 miles from South Lake Tahoe lies Kirkwood Mountain Resort. It may be remote, but in this solitary horseshoe canyon, climate and geography conspire to create one of the purest, most authentic, big-mountain ski experiences in North America. Kirkwood is the siren call for those adventure seekers who prefer their snow deep and their terrain steep. Home to the Freeride World Tour, the resort features some of the country’s most diverse and challenging inbounds terrain. From cornices to couloirs…from wide-open bowls to chutes too tight to turn a ski in…Kirkwood offers 2300 acres of mountain that will challenge skiers and riders from first chair to last. And if you’re craving prolific, majestic, magical snow, this is where you’ll find that rare blend of quantity and quality. Averaging more than 600 inches per year, it comes down lighter and drier and piles up much deeper at Kirkwood than anywhere else in the region.

Excellent Ski and Snowboard Resort. Excellent customer service staff. All the trails were awesome and great for any skill level. I ventured up here on a day trip and was absolutely amazed. I highly recommend Kirkwood if you want to bring anyone on a day ski or snowboard trip and bring the family members too. I also highly recommend grabbing a slice or two of pizza half way up the mountain at the Sunrise Grill.

It's a good place to ski with family. Weekdays are great time to hit the slope if you're learning, as there aren't many people around. Parking was easy as we came in early on a weekday. Staff was particularly nice and friendly. Snow was well groomed in the morning. Great location overall.

Great mountain with "historic" amenities. I was glad I had full days here. With only one high speed quad serving the upper mountain it was rather inefficient to get around using the chairs systems from decades ago. The mountain will also be closes in early April because Vail corporation regards profits as more important the serving the community as loyal patrons.

Nice resort, everything on site. Food, lodging, restaurant, bars. Everything closes early but nice family resort. Has nice run and lots of steep slopes. When snow is deep enough there are a lot of choices for going down the mountain between trees, canyon and Combs. This place get the most snow during storm. Has slopes for every level. I found that the beginner slopes are not near the more experience one which is great so beginner can learn with peace of mind. However lift ticket are really expensive compared to the size of the resort.

I loved that there was a good balance of long runs and short runs here. Some of the Blues have long portions of flat with only a slight incline and hills so if you brake a lot you might lose all your speed but there are also quite a few with no flats and lots of chances to practice your carving. Will definitely come back!
