Story

The Knife River is a 23.9mi river of northern Minnesota which drains a portion of Lake and Saint Louis counties into Lake Superior between Duluth and Two Harbors.NameThe Knife River's name is an accurate preservation of its native Ojibwe name, Mokomani Zibi. Its original name was probably given on account of the long, sharp stones near the mouth of the river.GeographyThe main branch of the Knife River flows from source to mouth, flowing parallel to the shoreline from the direction of Two Harbors. It has four or five major tributaries. Its watershed is 84.3sqmi, and contains 181.1mi of streams. Since data began being collected in 1974, its mean annual daily discharge of water has been calculated as 90.3cuft/s. There is concern over the river's water quality due to suspended sediment, and it was placed on the state's impaired waters list in 1998. A 2008 study found that about sixty percent of the sediment was coming from erosion of the streambanks, and about thirty from erosion of the river's bluffs. The Knife River's watershed is largely undeveloped, being 72% forest, 16% wetland, and 6% grassland. 5% is used for agricultural purposes, and the remaining 1% is the unincorporated community of Knife River, Minnesota, located at the river's mouth.

My family loves visiting this campground. Great facilities and owners. We usually come here for tent camping which has a little more privacy on those designated sites. We love the close proximity to the lake, great rates, clean bath house, and great owners!

We liked the actual campground. The staff was great and helpful when we needed them. Ice on site. We aren't big on super primitive camping so we didn't mind that there wasn't a ton of privacy between each camp site. However, it is right on a busy road and it gets pretty loud. The lake is close and there's a nice little beach to hang out on. The bathrooms are super clean and we'll stocked. Overall, we would stay here again. The factors that we didn't like are things that can't be controlled. It was affordable and we had a good time!

We had a great time with the family and the neighbors. The beach access to Lake Superior was great. They allow fires on the beach, which we had a great Time doing. The owners were very helpful and nice. When we stayed we went hiking at state parks and forests in the area, but there is plenty of other activities in Duluth and two harbors to participate in. Our family loved the campground and made many everlasting memories there. Our only concern was there wasn't much to do in knife river, but it wasn't a huge deal because of the large cities nearby. Great family oriented campground.

There is no better campground on the north shore. You might go for a place to camp, but you'll stay for the experience. The owner is the experience... knowledgeable, friendly and full of stories.
