Dinner last night at Koko Ni was a mediocre experience at best. Let me start with there was NO ALCOHOL. None at all. To spend that kind of money on a 2 hour dinner without the option for even a glass of wine is unforgivable. Now for the rest... We love fine dining and tasting menu's are our jam so we were hoping the food stood out. Overall it was just OK at best and the misses were big enough that I couldn't get past them. The Tuna came out looking like cat food and it had that not so fresh fish flavor which made it hard to eat. The scallops felt like they were past their prime and I get it we are landlocked in Colorado, so fresh can be challenging. The Duck, Oxtail and the Pasta dish were ok, but nothing really stuck out as that wow kinda dish. In this case the food didn't live up to the hype which is unfortunate because the ambiance and staff were fabulous.
Chef Paul and his team are doing some stunning work here that's one of a kind. It's Michelin level work without the high brow feel that you'd usually get. Staff are all very friendly, portion sizes were perfect, and our drink pairing by Alex kicked the omakase up a notch. Alex knows his stuff and was extremely passionate and excited about his work. I'm excited to see how this team continues to perfect and create more dishes. It's quite impressive how put together they are for only being open a couple of months. This is a definite stop for me the next time I'm in Denver. Can't miss it and would highly recommend!
Food was OK - as in any tasting menu I found some courses to be much better than others. Didn’t find it to be AS seafood forward as I expected. Our favorite courses were actually duck and steak. Also disappointed that they didn’t talk more about where the seafood was coming from considering their emphasis on sustainability. Would have been neat to hear more about that - I suppose I could have asked, but in other tasting experience the staff is typically excited to share these details. Also, they showed us the pairing menu when we sat down, which included a welcome mini cocktail and several glasses of wine. After a few courses I noticed we were not given the cocktail. When I lightly asked the server about that the response was, “oh, that’s not really a give in- not everyone is served that… but if you want it I guess I could make you one.” This was odd since all of the tables around us were clearly welcomed with the welcome cocktail…
That was a fantastic meal and a great experience. As a younger restaurant the service was not as flawless as Frasca or Beckon. But the food, flavors, and presentation were spot on. Our group of 4, all foodies, really enjoyed the evening and would go again.Food: 5/5
Shockingly not good. Truly, felt bad/embarrassed to have spent $300 for my wife and me to dine — plus the cost of the sitter. We were never officially greeted or welcomed after we were sat. They just sort of sporadically walked dishes out. There was also an awkward pacing and vibe throughout the whole meal. Nothing was notably good or even particularly hot. Everything was room temperature or just shy. My seafood had shells in it. My wife’s root vegetables were so tough she had to spit one out. Our tortellini was so lukewarm and chewy. The one decent dish was a salad, but that was because of the dressing. $300 later we were just hungry and frustrated. Honestly, I debated posting this. I don’t want to offend people, but given the poor level of service and the lackluster food, I felt like I had to. I’ve only gotten more frustrated, the more time that goes by. I am regretful. That was a lot of money.
Amazing service, excellent dishes. Came here for a 10 course meal, will be back.
This was so fun and delicious! The staff was wonderful and nice. Each dish had so many layers and unique lovely flavors. Well priced and great experience. Will be back!
This was the Fyre festival of tasting experiences. Not only was the food just okay but the entire experience was cold, awkward, and odd to be quite honest. For $150/person, I would have expected more substance. The largest course was four very small pieces of duck. Other courses were small bites. The oxtail, which I would expect to be very hearty and savory was about one small piece of meat on a bunch of sweet potatoes. The salad was seriously 1/10th of a cabbage if not less and loaded with dressing. Good flavor but no substance. There were 4 tortellini in lukewarm broth that was fine. The sunchokes were in large chunks and tough. The best course was the single oyster at the very start. All in all- the four of us left hungry and none of dishes were that great. Pacing- the pacing of courses wouldn’t have been so bad had there been paired wine or cocktails to sip on but we were left with these large gaps in courses with water. There were 4 staff members standing around at any given time with no sense of urgency to keep things moving. Lastly- the alcohol. Forgive me if I missed some fine print somewhere but it should be noted ahead of the reservation that they don’t have a liquor license. It was quite odd that we planned a special night out—a tasting menu experience—and learning as you sit that you can’t get wine or a cocktail. That should have been made clear up front. In summary- nothing was that great, this was not a $150/person meal nor $150 experience in general.
absolutely rave-able- ive been four times in the last couple months and and in love with both the food and the staff! what a perfectly curated experience that reflects both the expertise and personality of the chefs blessing us with such creativity! For how new they are- kinks here and there should be welcome in response to all the undeserving one to four star raters- especially j. dickson- hes a consistent d-bag ive eaten literally everywhere in denver and continue to return to see what chef paul and james have in store for us! cheers
Had a wonderful and very special meal with my mom that was visiting! All the dishes were delicious and very unique. The service was amazing. Thank you so much for the experience!
