I moved to the Bay a year ago from Alabama, so I stay looking for southern food when I get homesick. No surprise that I always find it in Oakland. But honestly nothing beats a cafeteria-style soul food stop like Lena’s. I had the smothered pork chops, Mac n cheese, and dressing. The dressing was better than my mama’s (don’t tell her I said that), and the pork chops were exactly what I needed today. The Mac n cheese was really good, but heavy on the black pepper for me. I think that is more of a family recipe preference than a comment on quality. Oh and the cornbread muffin that comes with the plate was AMAZING. I dipped mine in my gravy from the pork chops. So so good. If you aren’t used to real southern food, beware. Lena’s hit the spot for me, but even I couldn’t finish my plate. Can’t wait to have leftovers tomorrow!

I love Lena's Soul Food. Smothered chicken, baked fish, the collard greens yams and vegetables...it's all excellent. The service is great here too. I will miss Lena's since they're moving out of my neighborhood. I will make the journey out to their new location. Good food all around.

Great soul food. Friendly service. Prepare to wait in line for counter service. Oxtails run out quickly on Sunday. Great friend catfish. Big portions.

Ms.Lena's Soul Food Cafe has excellent home cook soul food. The prices are high for the quality of food. But customers service stink! They talk about personal business for all to hear. They seem that they are short of staff on there busy days. (Sunday's ) especially! It's alright to have fun while working, inter act with your customers more! Yes, you do get knuckle heads in there. But show your professional skills when dealing with them. They open at 11:00 but doors don't open till maybe 15 or 20 mintues later. Then some of the food is not ready. Don't get me wrong! The food is excellent always. Customer service stinks!

The food was delicious and the service was great. Really efficient, pleasant, professional staff. I can't wait to go back and try more things. I had fried chicken and green beans. When I first saw the green beans on my plate I was a little disappointed because I usually like my string beans kind of crunchy and theirs are cooked until they are soft, but then I tasted them. I don't know what magic seasonings they use, but those were the best string beans I have ever tasted. The food is served cafeteria style, and most people get their orders to go. I ate there, and so did a mother with two small children. It was a perfectly pleasant place to sit, but it felt a little funny sitting there watching people waiting in line. The line was pretty long, but it moved fairly quickly. People in line were quiet, just minding their own business, until I said, "Excuse me, have you been here before? What would you recommend?" Then they were friendly and helpful. They just opened a dine-in restaurant on Foothill Blvd., and I'm looking forward to trying it!
