We went in March when the road was closed presumably due to snow, which we only learned once we got there (be sure to check the forest service page for seasons). We decided to camp at the bottom on the mountain where the gate was, and hike up to the Meadow the next day. After a 3 mile hike uphill and through the snow, we arrived at the Meadow, and considering the amazing view of the it covered in snow, I can only imagine how much more amazing it looks in the warmer months. If you want an extremely quiet hike after a quiet night camping and have thick blood to endure the cold, this is a good, short trip during the Spring. As a side note, there were 3 other trucks the evening we were camped out that tried getting through, so apparently we weren't the only ones unprepared for the closure, but it's a good thing it was closed because there's no way anything less than a 4x4 monster with chains could have made it successfully. Also, there are no amenities at the bottom where we camped - just pure nature, so plan accordingly if you duplicate our little adventure.

Beautiful area to camp and hike. Be aware that there are fees for the usage areas - cash only.

So quiet and peaceful. Just enough other bikers and hikers for company. The Quaking Aspen trees are gathered in huge stands. The colors are incredible! God makes beautiful things. :)

Fantastic place to watch fall colors. We went on Oct 1st week end which is the perfect timing to see the yellow colored leaves all around the trial. Be watchful on the Uphill driving as it's not having lot of space for 2 way driving. Carry plenty of water (You can find a Walmart or Fry's in the trial route :). There will be plenty of families who came in on Oct 1st week end. (Not sure on the other days through there will be camping sites to attract few if not many of the outdoor minds)

Very nice sites, amazing views! I would highly recommend... However.... I believe that you can camp for free on the way up to Lockett Meadow - I saw a few people doing that. (I would verify for sure...) There are only pit toilets and no water, so camping in that area is similar. The trails are so nice... we hope to mountain bike up there and on the "water road".
