I stared at the flatiron building in disbelief. How could a full service, independent book store be standing in downtown Troy? I had been panhandled the moment I stepped off the bus, and yet Market Block Books sells bestsellers and books off the back list one block over from the panhandling district. I even see broadsides on the walls, signed by the author. That has always been a sign of a bookstore with regard for literature because Shaman Drum in Ann Arbor and City Lights Books in San Fransisco and Literati in Ann Arbor display broadsides proudly. So does the bookstore at Kenyon College and the little bookstore by St Louis King of France Cathedral in New Orleans. I have sat in the comfort of this house of literature, just enjoying the Shop Small Saturday fun, just writing without anybody giving me the stink eye.

There's just something about this place, I have fond memories in every corner of the store. I've found new favorite novels from staff recommendations, found some enlightenment in the philosophy and self-help sections, and grabbed old childhood favorites from the children's section. Whether I was going to buy something specific or just looking around it seems I always end up finding more than planned. But hey it's books, if you have too many just call it a library.

Have been going here for years. Stanley and the other booksellers always have excellent recommendations when I am looking for gifts. They are unfailingly cheerful and helpful, happy to special order things or help me find things, and they know their books!

Went in looking for a particular book (which the employees happily helped me find) and then was given an amazing recommendation by the cashier which I also purchased. Always a great experience

Great selection of books. A lot of emphasis on local too; whether it's authors, history, or adventures to be had.
