Classic hometown kind of place. Homemade food, plenty of it at a great price with warm and hospitable service. The fried chicken was wonderful, homemade cornbread so good and v sweet there was no need for butter, and the stuffing was delicious.  Try the sweet potato pie... Think of the best pumpkin pie ever... And compare to Mel's sweet potato! People buy whole pies to take home. Family run place by a classic !

Sure, it looks like a hole in the wall, but they have the best damn cornbread and a bunch of other amazing food for super reasonable prices. The place has personality too, and everyone was super nice.
Definitely would recommend if you're looking for traditional southern comfort food.

Mel's Cafe is an iconic place that you should not miss when visiting Charlottesville. Family-run for two generations, this is really some of the best feel-good food you will find. Definitely try the pork chops and gravy over rice or they're half pound burger will definitely make your stomach start to smile.

Thought it was just a hole in the wall but I was pleasantly surprised. The food is delicious. You can't go wrong with any choice on the menu. Love the potato salad. Extensive menu with lots of choices.

Excellent little diner!   Food was delicious and very affordable.  Staff was very friendly and attentive.  If you're around, you should definitely stop in!
