Dr. Marc Scheer was very thorough in his diagnosis and amazingly knowledgeable of our condition.

My husband went in for a colonospy due to his chronic lower GI issues. He checked with our insurance company and the procedure was covered. He scheduled the appointment with Dr Sizzler, with whom he is an established patient. When he scheduled he gave all his insurance info and discussed the procedure with the staff and the prep required. He went in and had the procedure done, all went well and everything looked good. About a month later, we got a bill in the mail from the office for $1400. My husband called to dispute the bill and they told him to contact the insurance company. He called the insurance company and they told him that the office coded the procedure as a referral and to call them back and have them recode the claim as preventative and resubmit. He called the office back and let them know what the insurance company had said to do and they told him that they would not recode the procedure because he was sent in on a referral and that he owes the balance due. He said, I was never made aware that the procedure was a referral, not preventative and the insurance company told him that the procedure was preventative and 100% covered. He called several more times and got ZERO help from the staff. The staff was extremely rude and unhelpful. Never at ANY point did they state the procedure was not preventative during the scheduling process and that he needed to check with the insurance company to make sure it was covered. If he would've known it wasn't he would've not done the test. They also gave him a song and dance about how if there's family history then the test would've been covered. Well guess what? There is a family history and they are aware of that since my husband has been to the office for several appointments as a patient after he had several surgeries related to his lower GI issues through other doctors. Plus his mother has many lower GI issues as well, info which he provided on his health history, during his new patient appointment. So they are basically splitting hairs with him over preventative vs 'referral' to the office. How can you be a 'referral' when you are already an established patient?! So now we are expected to pay this bill or be sent to collections. This is a blatant abuse of bureaucracy and red tape to screw over a patient who was under the impression the procedure was covered. This office is rude and unwilling to with with patients in regards to billing errors and hides behind 'regulations' as an excuse to unfairly bill patients for procedures. If you are referred here for any type of service, I would look elsewhere. They are not trustworthy and use bait and switch tactics for their billing. At the least, when an appointment is made the patient should be told that if they are under 50, without a family history and you come in as a 'referral' you should inquire with your insurance company to verify coverage. There is no way a patient would know to ask the insurance company if a 'referral' from another doctor to an office would affect the level of coverage for a procedure. This practice is deceptive and disgusting and they do nothing to help the patient but hang them out to dry. Patients beware.. I would give this practice ZERO stars if I could.

I live in a rural area-and traveled quite a distance to see Dr. Bernal at this practice. He did do a thorough evaluation to confirm my diagnosis, which required some minor surgery-I asked if he was okay with me getting it done by a surgeon I know closer to my home. Several hours in a car following surgery sounded like it would have been difficult for me to tolerate-I have other health issues beyond what I was asking him for help with, and was told they were fine with that. Almost right after the surgery-which was through no one's fault, filled with one complication after another, since I have an autoimmune disorder, whenever I would ask questions, for help with treating healing issues, a degree of issues with healing, the buck passing began. The final straw was when he wrote a script (non-controlled substance too), and when I needed a fill again, I was told "we have no record of that-that isn't something we use." Basic GI meds-I would get a hard time-when I wanted to change direction because of the complications I was having, I feel like my request was not taken seriously, and what I felt offered me a better quality of life-since what I have is an ongoing problem and will remain that-my feelings were not taken into account. Other times I felt like I was getting, even with objective proof that it wasn't a psychological problem, I was getting blown off as if it had been a mental health issue. Or that my education (I have an MS in medical case management until my health required I take my disability) would be respected-such as maybe I am aware of the risks of treatment, etc, and am making the choices that I feel most comfortable. The buck was passed to my family practice doc-who didn't feel prepared to manage the intervention I now need, or the surgeon who did the operation. Without my education, I think that there's been enough buck passing, without it, I shudder to think of what kind of shape I'd be in now. I think though Dr. Bernal has a good bedside manner-about all I would advise coming here for-is the annual colonoscopy. If it's anything serious-I'd advise that one keeps looking.
