Story

Momona is a noodle and bao restaurant located in downtown Chico. Momona offers a selection of dishes including Japanese ramen, steamed buns (bao), and culturally and locally influenced small plates. Momona makes every attempt to source locally and sustainably.

“Momona” is a Hawaiian word meaning “satiated, well-fed, satisfied, fat, fertile”. We love the idea of “momona” because it evokes being content, happy and full. We, as a team, live to eat and be happy.

Our inspiration comes from the traditions of Japan, Taiwan, and Hawai’i and is a combination of many memories, from saimin at Zippy’s to ramen ticket machines in Shibuya. Momona is our personal view of, and relationship with, noodle and bao. We are not a traditional ramen house, nor do we offer a traditional atmosphere. We are a combination of what we like most, the chefs who inspire us most, the parts of the world that melt our hearts; the moments we’ve felt most “momona”.

We make all of our broths, sauces, and pickled items in-house. We source our pig products from Llano Seco in Chico, CA. We source our produce locally and seasonally whenever possible (you’ll often see our executive chefs wandering the Saturday morning farmers’ market). Our ramen noodles are provided by Sun Noodles; they are fresh (not dry) alkaline ramen noodles, a recipe created to keep noodles both firm and chewy in the extremely high-temperature broth. Our bao buns are made in-house every day.

Momona is a counter-style service at lunch and full service at dinner time. We value a relaxed, positive environment and prioritize your personal time and quality in every moment. We want to give Chico fine-dining quality food in a casual atmosphere. Our primary hope of our restaurant is to offer the community of Chico a new, different, and absolutely delicious place to share a meal.

I’ve been here a couple of times and the food is good, but didn’t find anything that wowed me. The pork shoulder in the rice bowl is seasoned really great, but you don’t get much protein in either the noodle or rice bowls. The lettuce in the bowl is huge and not easy to make bite size with chopsticks. Many of the items on the list are things that the majority of people aren’t familiar with, and could use a bit more explanation in the menu. The base price of things are reasonable for the area, but the add ons are pretty expensive. 50 cents for chili oil or garlic? $2 for an egg? The location and overall ambiance of this place is pretty great. Seating is pretty slim, and they charge you $1.50 for to go orders “to offset the price of paper products”. I was lucky to find a seat, and there’s no table service at lunch. When I went here with my family for dinner it was a 35 minute wait, so we had beer at the Bear since there’s really no place to wait inside Momona. They do take reservations, so I recommend doing that if you are coming here with more than 2 people.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! It is literally MY FAVORITE. I could eat their spicy poke bowl every day it is so good. I love their noodle bowls too, but wow, the poke. TRY IT! It's so worth the $$.

This cured my crazy ramen craving I was having. So yummy, trendy, great staff, great prices, and cool location. Definitely my go to place for a ramen fix. And their drinks are so lovely and redressing.

Loved the classic Bao, and the double dip. The flavor was delicious in both. The only item I wasn't thrilled about was the Bao with chicken. The cocktails we tried were refreshing as well! One had elderflower and the other was a ginger drink. Our waitress was super chill as well.

Build your own noodle or rice bowl and add a side, like the fried rice balls with pork belly. Always great food and friendly service.
