Mountain Creek

Story

Action Park is an amusement park located in Vernon, New Jersey, United States, on the grounds of the Mountain Creek ski resort. The park consists primarily of water-based attractions and originally opened to the public in 1978 under the ownership of Great American Recreation, who also owned the ski resort which at the time operated under the name Vernon Valley/Great Gorge. The original Action Park was open until 1996 and featured three separate attraction areas: the Alpine Center (featuring an alpine slide), Motorworld, and Waterworld. The latter was one of the first modern American water parks. Many of its attractions were unique, attracting thrill-seekers from across the New York City metro area. The park's popularity went hand-in-hand with a reputation for poorly designed, unsafe rides; under-aged, under-trained, and often under-the-influence staff; intoxicated, unprepared visitors; and a consequently poor safety record. At least six people are known to have died as a result of mishaps on rides at the original park. It was given nicknames such as "Traction Park", "Accident Park", and "Class Action Park" by doctors at nearby hospitals due to the number of severely injured customers they treated. Little action was taken by state regulators despite a history of repeat violations. In its later years, personal injury lawsuits led to the closure of more and more rides, and eventually the entire park. Many visitors spent the night in the adjacent Great Gorge Village Condominiums which offered hotel accommodations. The troubled complex is now a lower income and derelict housing complex

Being the closest resort to the city is a major advantage. And they have night skiing with well lit trails. Went there recently for the fresh powder following a snow day and had a great time especially since some of the trails were left ungroomed. Staff is very friendly and the rentals were in pretty good shape. While two of the peaks are straight trails the south peak is basically all terrain. Seems like a lot of people go for that if that is what your interested in.

A nice ski resort which is pretty close to the NYC and Jersey City area. The place has decent number of ski slopes and pretty good training program as well. The training and other stuff has normal pricing. However it becomes pretty crowded because if the proximity to the NYC area. Do check the status of their snow depth online before visiting.

First visit as our skiing twins wanted to try it. Pretty bad conditions...a slush fest with ground appearing in spots. Very nice lodge but did not try any food. Have own equipment so not sure what rental process is like. Nice gas fire on the patio. Free parking is a bit of a hike to the ticket window and lodge. Overall impression was that the layout felt a bit disjointed with lifts being so far apart from each other. They issue scan cards that you just put in a pocket on your left side of your body And it scans as you walk through entrance to lift. Weird at first but worked well.

I would definitely return as the main reason for the trip - skiing - was great. Mountains are well maintained, conditions were great despite no natural snow on the ground, lifts have short lines and moved along great. However, the rental process is a total nightmare. Between check-in, rentals and returns, the entire process was about 3 hours and I got to the mountain a little bit after 9am. If you are a first time renter, you wait on an initial line to check in (enter names of party into computer and sign waivers); you then move to a second line to get your tickets and provide security deposit; next line for helmet; next line for boots; next line for skis. Not sure why you can't do the sign-in, waivers and deposit on-line when you purchase your tickets (I purchased before I went and saved zero time). A lot of people jumping ahead in line and not enough staff to monitor. If you return and rent again, you get to skip the check in process, but those people are just mixed into the first time people when you move to the area to pay and they get in front of you, so the process it just really, really slow. Also, during the check in process if you happen to get assign to a computer towards the pay area, you can just turn around and step into the line right there. Those assigned to a computer towards the rear end up on the back of the line. I seriously think I will just buy skis so I don't have to do this again. My kids were DYING.

Apparently, if there is a special event like a concert being held at the main Lodge near the slopes you will be kicked out unless you have a wristband for the event. So, if you have children on the slope you will be bused 1 mile down the road to sit there while your kids no matter what ages they are are left to fend for themselves. I was told I can go sit in the bar section upstairs which I did. Since we had Twilight tickets the kids were going to spend a little longer in the evening getting the most of the evening. At around 8 p.m. a man came to us and said we were not allowed to sit upstairs any longer that it would be close to us at 8 p.m. and we had to leave. When I challenge the idea that it was wrong to move us the manager told me that it was written on the website. I asked where? He said under special events. So basically if you want to know if you can hang out in the main Lodge you need to go under special events I think for it yourself even though you have no prior knowledge of any kind of policy that says you would be removed. Mountain Creek is run by a bunch of Thieves. I tried to purchase tickets and made the mistake of not buying one lift and one rental ticket together. I was told it was too difficult on the phone to get it redone. So I ended up buying the rental equipment ticket from the window at Mountain Creek. I will never come back to this place again. We are just a bunch of dollar signs and they have no consideration for families with young children and adults who watch those young children and for some reason or another cannot be on the slope with their kids. Worst place ever to ski. Never coming back. And to make something clear my criticism does not reflect on the staff or the waiters or waitresses or even the managers they were all very kind. Upper management this message is for you.
