Story

The George Gustav Heye Center is a branch of the National Museum of the American Indian in Manhattan, New York City. The museum is part of the Smithsonian Institution. The Center features contemporary and historical exhibits of art and artifacts by and about Native Americans.HistoryThe center is named for George Gustav Heye, who began collecting Native American artifacts in 1903 and opened the Museum of the American Indian on Audubon Terrace in upper Manhattan in 1922. That museum closed in 1994 and part of the collection is now housed at the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House on Bowling Green in Lower Manhattan. The Beaux Arts-style building, designed by architect Cass Gilbert, was completed in 1907. It is a designated National Historic Landmark and a New York City landmark. The center’s exhibition and public access areas total about 20000sqft. The Heye Center offers a range of exhibitions, film and video screenings, school group programs and living culture presentations throughout the year.GalleriesThe permanent collection of the Heye Center is called Infinity of Nations, and is designed to show the scope of the Smithsonian's collection. Organized by geographic regions (including Central and South America), the exhibit displays over 700 items and crosses the line from ethnology to art. Multimedia interactions include audio and video, and feature commentary by historians on specific objects. The rotunda is frequently used as a performance space, and features murals reflecting the history of the building, done by Reginald Marsh. Other galleries include the Photography Gallery, Special Exhibit Galleries, Contemporary Galleries, the Haudenosaunee Discovery Room, the Resource Center Reference Library, a small theater (which screens daily films), and the museum store. The ground floor of the building houses the Diker Pavilion for Native Arts and Culture and the Education Center (referred to as the Tipi Room).

The museum is free (or at least it was when I went). Quite small--only 2 floors, and the first only has one exhibit--but well done and very nice. I actually liked that it was small and specialized because it isn't overwhelming and you can get fully absorbed. I found it interesting and engaging, and it is also housed in a beautiful, historical building (which is also home to the national archives) right off the water. Highly recommend if you're interested in American Indian culture and have an hour or two to spare. Staff were friendly and helpful. Went on a sumer weekend but it still wasn't overly crowded. Great trip. Not sure I would recommend for children, they'd probably be bored.

Wonderful museum with amazing exhibitions. Really well done. Good lighting in a beautiful building. Wasn't too crowded on a weekday and staff was friendly and helpful. Didn't take the guided tour, but definitely will next time. Well lit rooms and fairly quick, even if you like to indulge in every artifact.

Excellent FREE museum to visit at Bowling Green, Downtown Manhattan. I learned about so many Native American Tribes I never heard of and their contribution to all stages of society and the military. The true inhabitants of the American continents from Alaska to the Patagonia, Argentina. Affordable souvenirs and friendly staff.

Stunningly Gorgeous building with sweeping spiral staircase, enormous oval dome, and beautiful stonework. Two floors, elevator and bathrooms. Excellent collections and display of a wide variety of objects from across the Americas. Great giftshop, including books, instruments, artwork, crafts and more from low budget to high end. Kids age 8-10 and adults enjoyed the visit. Guests have bags scanned on entry, guards are friendly. Entrance was a bit hard to find. It is on the east side of the building across facing Lady Liberty.

This is a hidden treasure in New York City. There are a lot of artifacts from different areas and tribes. It is free to go and there was hardly anyone there. Definitely worth a quick stop.
