Story

The New Museum is the only museum in New York City exclusively devoted to contemporary art. Found­ed in 1977, the New Museum is a center for exhibitions, information, and documentation about living art­ists from around the world. From its beginnings as a one-room office on Hudson Street to the inauguration of its first freestanding building on the Bowery designed by SANAA in 2007, the New Museum continues to be a place of experimentation and a hub of new art and new ideas.

I wish I could give it 0 stars. There were 3 floors of "exhibits" and a poorly filmed movie below ground floor. (There will be more in future, I'm guessing because there are 8 floors). All floors have only one artist, so if the artist either isn't good or isn't your cup of tea, that floor is worthless. When I went, there were 2 floors of neo expressionist art. (one was mainly eyeballs and penises...also a lovely piece that looked like a 3rd grader drew a person defecating.) Another was what I assume was the artists commentary of the world's lack of individuality and angst toward large stores (this particular one Costco). I just disagree entirely with it's premise and the lack of knowledge of economics, so this floor was another bust. One floor actually had art. I was surprised. There was some detail in the faces that the artist took the time to depict some raw emotion. Of course, this was the smallest floor and other than the faces there was no other detail work. In short, it is not a museum worth going to... And it's more of a collection of individuals art rather than an actual museum. Do research before you go, or go on a day when apparently the price is objective, and make sure you're a fan of one of the possible four artists they display.

We decided to attend a pay-as-you-wish Thursday night. It was the last week of Pixel Forest installation and we were determined to see it no matter what! My understanding that this museum is especially fun to visit if you are eager to see a particular exhibition. Although the line was scary and looping around the block, it moved pretty fast. One of the floors was closed because they were changing exhibitions, but we still spent over an hour at the museum. My recommendation is to start on the top floor and make your way down.

Such interesting art there and it was all just so far from the norm and takes you somewhere else. Loved it.

The museum has some interesting exhibitions which are quite different from other contemporary museums in the city. However, the 1 star grade is for a lack of consideration. I'm totally traumatized yesterday by a graphic video on the second floor. The video showed a woman giving birth. For those who has seen this kind of videos, you know what it is like. I've never seen a birth-giving video before. Without any warning, I was exposed to the horrific scene. Some people, as myself, are very sensitive to bleeding images and wounds. At least there should be visible sign that says "Graphic image. Viewer discretion is encouraged."
