Story

NORM was founded in 1965 and incorporated in 1976 as a not-for-profit education and historical organization. Located at 5515 Buffham Road in Medina County, Ohio (near Chippewa Lake), the museum is working towards its goals to collect, preserve, restore, display and operate streetcars and other railway equipment for use by the public. Members of the Northern Ohio Railway Museum have collected over thirty Streetcars and Interurbans. From a simple beginning we have constructed a carhouse and restoration facility as well as a preservation barn. In the future our collection, restored to it original, elegant condition, will carry visitors on a two mile section of former Cleveland and Southwestern Interurban right-of-way into a fading, bygone era - The Trolley Era. We are open for public display Saturday afternoons Spring thru Fall. Visit our web site for additional information.

It's a trolly museum with rolling stock mostly from northern Ohio. It's a work in progress. They recently added trolly rides and they are making track repairs and adding electrical cable for longer runs. Tours of their collection are interesting.

The Northern Ohio Railway Museum (aka NORM) is open every Saturday, 10 AM to 4 PM, May through October only. Volunteers staff the place: store, walking tours, streetcar rides, and restoration/maintenance. The project is huge requiring copious amounts of time and money to undertake restoration of equipment and expansion of the facilities. Northeastern Ohio natives will recognize rapid transit trains spanning their lifetimes from CTS to RTA. Much older cars offer a nostalgic view of the past when high-speed (60 MPH+) Intraurban service carried passengers between Ohio cities. Because of resource shortfalls most of the rolling stock is in need of repair and restoration but that does not diminish the interest the place holds for streetcar and trolley fans. Visit, donate, and get a taste of the rail past!

Last place to ride an early 1900s trolley car and see the museum restorations in progress.

The Northern Ohio Railway Museum is one of those hidden gems in our area that you have got to take the family to visit. I have been a railroad enthusiast for 40 years and have only recently discovered them. I was quite surprised to see how much equipment they actually have there, all in different stages of preservation. It was an enjoyable, leisurely experience with knowledgeable volunteers who are rail fans just like us. They enjoy talking trains and are dedicated to preserving one of the very things that made our country great. This is a great place to get "up close and hands on" with what I believe to be a fading national treasure. I don't believe you will be disappointed.
