O. Henry Museum

About

The museum is the historical home of William Sydney Porter, the short story writer known as O. Henry, whose legacy is preserved through programs and tours.

Story

William Sydney Porter rented this Queen Anne-style cottage in the early 1890s. Originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, he moved to Texas in his early 20s. In Austin, Porter worked day jobs as a draftsman in the General Land Office and as a teller at the First National Bank. In 1898, Porter was found guilty of embezzling money from the bank and was sentenced to five years in federal prison. There he embraced his pen name, O. Henry, and had time to write. Upon his release, he moved to New York, where he regularly published stories, among them “The Gifts of the Magi.”

The house became a museum in 1934, and in 1999 it became a National Literary Landmark. Each year since 1978, the museum has hosted the Pun-Off World Championships, a wordplay competition that has received praise from CBS Sunday Morning, NPR, and The Paris Review. The museum offers an array of programming, including exhibits, events, and reading and writing workshops for adults and children. Visitors can enjoy free guided tours highlighting Porter’s extraordinary life, while learning about the history of Austin.

The Museum is part of Brush Square Museums, three historic museums consisting of the Susanna Dickinson Museum, the O. Henry Museum, and the Austin Fire Museum. The Dickinson and O. Henry Museums assist in running the Austin Fire Museum, operated by the Austin Fire Museum Hook & Ladder Society.

I loved reading O Henry in school, so I was so pleasantly surprised to learn that he had resided in Austin when I moved here. I attended this year’s 40th O Henry Pun Off and it was so much fun! But, the highlight was being able to tour O Henry’s house and learn a little bit more about his personal history. The house tour is free and they have a lot of original items, including some of O Henry’s personal effects. If you are a tourist, native Austinite, or just a nerd like myself, I highly recommend stopping in and checking out this historic house as well as next year’s pun off!

This tiny little museum next to the convention center in the heart of downtown Austin gives a glimpse into life in Austin 100 years ago for an underemployed family man and aspiring writer, William Sidney Porter. The site is adjacent to a public transit bus and train stop, making it easy to enjoy the house and its small park on a sunny day. I went on a cold and windy winter day to hear a reading of "The Cop and the Anthem," complete with a brief vocabulary lesson of words from the 1800s we don't use or use differently now. It's an intimate setting for monthly readings and other events that evoke the period of this well known author.
