Palmetto State Park

Story

Palmetto State Park is a state park located in Gonzales County, Texas, United States northwest of Gonzales and southeast of Luling. The land was acquired by deeds from private owners and the City of Gonzales in 1934 - 1936 and was opened in 1936.FeaturesThe park is named for the dwarf palmetto, which grows abundantly in the park. The San Marcos River runs through the park. The 4acre Oxbow Lake, initially created by flood waters, is now independent of the river and is spring fed. There are many bogs throughout the park that are surrounded by dense vegetation, giving the park a jungle-like atmosphere. The park was constructed by Civilian Conservation Corps Companies 873 and 886 between 1934 and 1937. The CCC built Park Road 11, a low water crossing on the San Marcos River, a water tower/storage building, refectory, and residence, barbeque pits, picnic seating, rock pool and retention dams, rock table, culverts, concrete picnic tables, and two sets of entrance portals.FloraIn addition to the dwarf palmetto, red buckeye and rattan vine are prevalent in the park.FaunaWhite-tailed deer are common throughout the park, as are raccoons, nine-banded armadillos, and fox squirrels. Over 240 species of birds such as the pileated woodpecker, and Kentucky warbler have been recorded within the park's boundaries. Some of the birds often spotted include the prothonotary warbler, and red-shouldered hawk.

This was a wonderful place to camp and have some much needed nature time. Sadly the riverside campsites were flooded from too much rain but the rangers were helpful and got us a new campsite. We enjoyed the area they have clean restrooms and the little lake was fun. Lovely hikes and the whole family had a great trip!

Great find in central Texas. Several easy, well marked gravel trails. There is a playground, canoeing, kayaking and peddle boating. The trails are bike-able too. If you are camping there are host families who are more than happy to assist. Great find for our family. There is a $3 per person fee for those 13yrs +.

A very nice! The park is very maintained with the feel of nature. There is something to do and keep you and the kids busy. There's paddle boats, canoes, hiking and fishing. If you like to fish or the kids would like too state parks allow you to fish on shore without a license. Some even have loaners or rental rods. Just some FYI for those that would like to or just don't have a lot of fishing time so you never bought a license. The hiking trails are very relaxing and scenery is great. Once again you can walk it or bike it. It is a pet friendly park . They ask you pick up after your furry friend but you may be holding that bag for awhile there's no where to dispose of it on trail.

So green and lush with lots of flowers! We'll maintained trail makes for an easy 4.7 miles of hiking. The trails are bordered with high grasses so watch for ticks and snakes.

Great park, clean, well maintained. Beautiful hiking trails, I especially enjoyed walking the Mesquite Flats trail in the morning. Showers were clean & water hot. It’s nice the HQ has snacks & beverages. I didn’t care for the $3 per day entrance fee in addition to campground fee, especially when staying multiple days....you enter once, pay once.
