About

Phelps Grove is one of ten historic parks in the Springfield-Greene County Park Board system.

Story

Named for John Smith Phelps, Missouri Congressman, 23rd Governor of Missouri and Springfield founding father, Phelps Grove includes 31 acres of the original 1,000-acre Phelps family homestead.
Creation of Phelps Grove was one of the first projects undertaken by the Springfield (now Springfield-Greene County) Park Board after its formation in 1913.
Known for its mature trees, walking loop and playground, Phelps Grove is beloved by kids, students, neighbors and Springfield residents of all ages. The park also includes tennis courts, a rose garden, Victim's Memorial Garden, stone barbecue pits and large stone pavilion, built in 1916 and designed by Archibald Torbitt, by the same architect which designed the Greene County Courthouse. Fassnight Creek borders Phelps Grove on the south, with the stream channel and picturesque stone bridges built by the WPA.
Historic Markers honoring John Phelps and his wife, Mary Whitney Phelps, are located near the corner of Brookside Drive and Virginia Ave.
To rent the pavilion, call the Park Board office at 417-864-1049

What a beautiful park! Lots of shade on the north side of the park. We took some family pictures there with a photographer and they turned out great. Seems to be a little bit of something for everyone there. Walking path, playground for the kids, big grassy areas, tennis courts. To boot the homes around the park are beautiful to look at as well.

Great park and have a lot of fun taking our kids here to play. We are close enough to walk but there is always parking open. They have a covered venue area, bathrooms, tennis courts, large playground and swings, asphalt trail around park and a kiddie pool just across the street that is overseen by a life guard. Not a place to be after dark like most public places though.

I love this park. I have so many great childhood memories and it hasn't changed much. It's clean and a great place for a picnic.

Beautiful park, great place to let the kids play, have a picnic, and walk or run on track. Only bad thing is used to have a bad reputation about being a gay hook-up place. But things seem to have changed.🌈🙂
