Our history...
The year 1888 marked our beginnings as a small tasting pub within Fitger’s Brewing Company, just a stones throw down the street. In 1914, the establishment moved to this present location. Why the move and how the name the Pickwick was chosen remains a mystery the caliber of Stonehenge.
What we can confirm is that bartender Joseph S. Wisocki borrowed $200 and bought the business in 1918 – the year prohibition was enacted. For 15 long years Joe served “Near Beer” and sandwiches. In 1933 when Franklin D. Roosevelt lifted this dark shroud off America, Duluth naturally celebrated at the Pickwick. Our Pub remained open 24-hours that December day and served upwards of 9,000 people. A stein of beer cost a nickel.
Since that time we've groomed our reputation as a purveyor of fine foods and earned a James Beard Foundation Award in 2007. We hope you enjoy an award-worthy meal while steeping in the Pickwick’s Old World atmosphere.
Our European style woodwork and furniture is a hardy hat tip to Duluth’s skilled immigrants. Even the painted canvases in the Dutch Room were brought over from the former location and deserve your close attention. Hidden in these artworks are a five-fingered monk, a grasshopper commemorating the insect plague of 1873 and beer-brewing gnomes.
Lastly, behind our bar is a hogshead cask from the Fitger’s establishment. Urban myth says a tap once ran between the two buildings, but you can’t believe everything people tell you. Just what’s written on the back of a menu.
