Although the view is amazing and something that should be experienced, the food and service are nothing short of terrible. Server took a long time to come back around even though the restaurant was pretty empty for the time we went. Was given a kids menu with activities however no markers or crayons to color with. After asking and told we would be given some, not once during our service were given anything for our daughter to color with. Hair was in our food which got sent back; however no manager ever responded or got an apology for. One of the two pancakes was completely burnt on bottom and the other was perfectly fine. Looking and the floor it looked like it hadn't been cleaned our vacuumed in months, crumbs were everywhere and the glass windows seemed smeared. To top it off, the small drinks (orange juice and chocolate milk) are charged as large drinks. Unless you came up just for the bar area or the view, I would not recommend this place for eating at.

Awesome food, wonderful atmosphere, service was excellent. We arrived at 6:30 in early October - perfect for seeing the sunset and enjoying our perfectly paced meal. Our server was excellent and comped us a geat little dessert when we told her we were on our honeymoon. Hubby had steak - no complaints and he is a steak lover. I had the salmon and I would order it again. We lingered until 9 or so as it was fabulous to see Duluth "in the round."

This was my second and my family's first visit. I thought it would be a great experience for them. We were a group of 7, arriving mostly separately. Unfortunately, the is no waiting/seating area except for the bar, which has high bar stools and are not accessible for some of my family members. It is a smaller menu selection than I anticipated. They did allow for substitutions, which was nice. However, a few things bothered me. First, the amount of food was not in line with the pricing (very small portions). This could have been acceptable if the quality of the food hadn't been mediocre at best. The asparagus was undercooked (very crunchy). The walleye was very greasy, though it was supposed to be broiled. The meatloaf was salty. Even the garlic mashed potatoes were disappointing. Finally, there was a sense of 'trickery' when ordering. Most restaurant entrees include soup or salad. When we ordered, the waitress said, "would you like the soup or salad?" Anyone would of course assume this means it comes with the meal. This did not become evident until the bill arrived (at $8 and $12 each, in addition to the costs of the entrees, which were about $30 or so each). We were comp'd 2 desserts in celebration of an anniversary and a birthday, and they were actually tasty. However, that appreciation faded upon receiving the bill (with the unexpected costs of the salads and soups). We went for the experience, and the views were nice, but the "ride" is not smooth. It gets loud, and at times it feels like someone is kicking you underneath your chair, and it is annoying! I won't be back, and no longer recommend this 'experience'.

We had the strangest experience with JJ Astors. We called to make a reservation about a half hour before we planned to dine. We were told "We are full and we do not take reservations less that 2 hours in advance. I said to my fiancee, "He's lying" We are very familiar with the pulse of life in the Duluth area so we knew that on a cold, snowy, evening many people stay home. We decided to call his bluff and went to dinner anyway. Upon our arrival we were seated immediately in a restaurant that was no more than one third full. The meal was delicious as always, service prompt and efficient. Why the curious lies about being full?

One of kind place to eat at. Coming in at first, if you stare at the outer walls and floor, it is a bit disconcerting but it spins slowly enough that once you're sitting down and eating, you don't really notice. It's a fantastic concept that if you start eating on the side that doesn't face the lake or what ever view you want to see, eventually you'll be able to see it. We got the steak and it was good. The mashed potato puree was tasty as well as the raspberry lemon cake. The prices are up there but it's a pretty fancy place. Fun fact: it takes about an hour for the restaurant to make one full rotation. Roughly 1.8 minutes to pass through 2 window panels :)
