Gateway to the Sierra's and Red Hawk Casino!

Story

You'll think you've struck gold when you discover the Placerville KOA-and you have! Located in the glorious Sierra foothills between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe, it's a terrific launching pad for trips to California's Gold Country, the American River, wineries, Apple Hill, Old Town Sacramento and the Red Hawk Casino. Take a world-famous whitewater rafting trip down the American River for a day you'll never forget. Check out the area's fine wineries or plentiful apple orchards with handmade crafts, pies and pastries. When you're hot and tired, relax in KOA's refreshing pool (in-season), or take the free on-call shuttle to Red Hawk Casino next door for a delicious buffet. Sunday mornings in the summer, KOA serves a fabulous breakfast. Before you leave, be sure to pamper the adorable miniature goats in the petting zoo. Coming soon: A new, larger dog park for your four-legged buddies.

There is free Wi-Fi with great speed. Public kitchen is very useful. Tent sites open all year, even in winter.

I choose not to stay here in my Class B on learning the fee would be a $48 with no hook ups of any kind. Their policy is to not allow even 30 amps and water for smaller campers.

I wondered why this KOA had a rating of less than 3 stars. I generally love staying with KOA, as they usually have everything one may need & are great for families. We all have our challenging days, thus I rate this at 2 stars instead of 1. I found it nearly impossible to get someone to answer a phone or return a call simply to address a single question. The receptionist was flying solo & a bit stressed, thus the rudeness comes with the package. Perhaps they need a second receptionist? I believe in second chances, but beware. Hopefully the owners will take heart & listen to their patrons, thereby improving their status. Happy trails & success to both traveler & service provider.

While some of the sites are okay we got put into one that was horrible and almost impossible to back into. We were told we were getting a pull through and ended up getting the back up site from hell. While they allow dogs it is not a great place for dogs. The ground is covered in those round barbs and there is very little shade with all the heat. Some camp sites give you very little room to even use the table provided. The fish pond is stale standing water. The front desk is also less than helpful. We were told on the phone to get off on a wrong exit, causing us to drive even further. Except for one person at the front the other guys were very abrupt and offered no information or help at all.
