Portola Redwoods State Park is a California state park, located in San Mateo County. Peters Creek and Pescadero Creek meet in Portola, and are the park's primary watercourses, and feature numerous tributaries. Tip Toe Falls is a small waterfall along Fall Creek, a tributary of Pescadero Creek. Portola Redwoods State Park contains approximately 18 miles of hiking trails in the 2,800-acre park, a small car-camping campground of about 50 campsites, four group campsites, and 6 trail sites at Slate Creek Trail Camp. Portola Redwoods State Park is also home to the site of Page shingle Mill, for which Page Mill Road is named.NameThe name of the state park was suggested by Aubrey Drury at a Park Commission meeting and was adopted on motion of Commissioner Leo Carrillo, a descendant of members of the Portolá expedition.

Initially planned to take the Coyote Ridge Trail but found that it was closed. So, we headed for the Slate Creek Trail. The trail is totally covered with trees and this is a backpacking route. The trail looked like ideal for summer hikes. There are some campsites couple of miles inside the trail. The campsites didn't seem to have any fireplace. There is a bathroom inside. At night it surely gets pretty dark out here for the campers as it is all covered with tall trees. You will come across a lot of narrow paths, redwoods, banana slugs, insects along with LOTS of mosquitoes(which were becoming annoying at times).

PROS: The campsites were nice, but if you're a tent camper I noticed many of the sites lacked level areas. The forest was beautiful and it was a relaxing place to spend a few days. If your forecast calls for windy weather, you probably won't see too many mosquitoes. CONS: The bathrooms were not good. I camp a lot and my expectations aren't high. But the bathrooms weren't cleaned during our 3 days there and almost all were without toilet paper until the day we left. What made this even worse was that when we visited the visitor center there were 2 park workers sitting on computers. Other cons include the curvy (although scenic) drive and the disappointing center piece of Tiptoe Falls. Generally, I would give Portola Redwoods another chance because the forest is beautiful and relaxing. Hence, 3 stars.

Approach roads very steep and extremely narrow.. Huge number of mosquitoes. Carry some protection against them. Some good views, but marred by the mosquitoes which would not let me stay still..
