Yes it has changed a lot since the 70s but still it is a very relaxing peaceful place. It definitely has its own culture and it is different than any other spot in San Diego

The best beach pier I've been to in my life and that's probably only because I'm from the East coast. Ours don't get this pretty, esp. In Dec. I like the little shops that go with the place too. Very relaxing and scenic place to say the least

Imperial Beach culture has gone through gentrification, like everywhere else... but there's nowhere else you go along the beaches of San Diego where you feel like you are removed to a different place and culture like a short drive to IB. It still retains a distinct laid back and relaxed vibe but nowadays there are many more things to see and do, with craft breweries, lots of food choices and a variety of things to do other than the beach. If you were only going to brave the crowds once a year at the beach to check out a new place then it would have to be Imperial Beach in the Summer on the weekend of the Sandcastle contest- you can park a mile away and Uber in to a really cool sand sculpting contest and a parade...this is one of the beaches where getting there by car is the best option, as it is not near the trolley or the city center.

Nice little beach. Various parking areas and variety of shoreline shops and eats. Not crowded like some other more popular beaches of the area. Nice and relaxing any time!
