Story

Purgatory Chasm State Reservation is a state-owned geologic preserve and public recreation area located off Route 146 in the town of Sutton, Massachusetts. The state park is notable for its.25mi, 70ft chasm of granite bedrock with abrupt precipices and boulder caves where ice lingers into the early summer. It is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.HistoryVarious theories have been proposed to account for the chasm's creation. According to one, the chasm was created when glacial meltwater from a burst ice dam ripped out blocks of bedrock at the end of the last Ice Age (14,000 years ago). Purgatory Chasm was declared a state park in 1919.Activities and amenitiesThe park is open year round, although the chasm is closed to hikers and climbers during the winter months because of ice hazards. There are 2mi of hiking trails around the chasm; rock climbing is allowed by permit. The reservation also includes picnic areas, a visitors center, and playground. In popular cultureA book of poems by Susan Edmonds Richmond titled Purgatory Chasm, a song by Holly Hanson of Neptune's Car titled "Lover's Leap," and Purgatory Chasm, a novel by Steve Ulfelder, were inspired by hikes in the chasm.

While the rocks in the chasm can be a bit tricky, it was a real easy hike with an interesting landscape. It's a short walk, but take your time exploring the rocks and mini caves to get the most out of it. There's also a decent size playground near the entrance for families with young children and picnic tables before the chasm begins and a few sprinkled on Charlie's Loop Trail. We had a good time :)

Took my husband and dogs hiking there. The holes that drop about 10-15 feet were scary for the little dogs we have (7 lbs). But we kept them on a close leash. There were only a couple places they needed help with. A nice little waterfall at the end, and a long home back around the outside were enough to tire all 4 of us.

Check this free place out. Spend 15 minutes in the chasm and you'll be amazed. Plan a 1/2 day here with a picnic lunch, hiking etc. Enjoy the outdoors!

I loved it here, really enjoyed it. I would advise people that are interested going here to make sure they are physically fit and able to balance themselves. One wrong slip and you're going to really hurt yourself. They have a couple of different trails, so if you didnt like one you can pick another one!

Used to be better when parking was free but it's still a fun place to take the kids for a fund summer day hike as there are different trails which are comfortable for tiny feet and shaded by the trees.
