Story

The Rustic Inn was built in the mid -1920s by Emil Edison as part of one of the first cabin resorts on Lake Superior. With its hand milled, self supporting, cedar walls & birch floor, it is just as warm and welcoming now as it was almost 100 years ago.

Over the years it has been a favorite gathering place for family & friends both old and new. If only the walls could talk. Our Original Dining Room has hosted everything from Weddings, Baby Showers, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Graduations, Family Reunions, funerals, and even been turned into a dance hall a time or two.

In 1986 Jim & Beth Sullivan purchased The Rustic Inn and so the story begins..

Serving Skillets and Omlette’s for Breakfast, Fresh Lake Superior Fish, Tender Roast Beef with Homemade Mashed Potatoes & Gravy for Lunch; as well as Burgers and of course Fresh Lake Superior Fish and Homemade Pies the business grew rapidly.

A Gift Shop was added by acquiring the Naturalists home From Gooseberry Falls State Park. Soon after, we discovered that we had to move due to highway construction; So we picked up our buildings and moved them! 3 blocks to exact. At that time we added another dining room and additional retail space. time we went year round and added a snowmobile trail for our winter guests.

Our restaurant is truly a family affair with our children and our grandchildren often seen.

Recently, Jim has stepped out to let our son David take a more active role with Beth; and so a new chapter begins.

We are truly grateful and thankful for each and every one of our customers and friends. We would invite you to join us and would like to get to know you!

Took 5 minutes to get a menu, took 10 minutes for the waitress to take my order, waited for a drink refill for 20 minutes and never got one or was even offered a refill. The waitress tended the other tables and continued ignoring my table of 4. She wouldnt even look at our table. Only 1 person was given a refill. The food was nothing special and way over priced. Thought about buying a shirt there, but the waitress with the poor service quickly changed my mind. I do not recommend this place. I will never go back.

Great service with friendly servers. The menu had many choices that you wanted to try a small serving of each. Had the prime rib french dip. Delicious fresh squarely shaped rye roll. Cheese melted into the meat. Homemade potato chips were wonderful. There were 6 of us in our group and we all loved our different choices we made. We shared 5 different pie slices to die for. All bought pies to go. Go back again next time up north.

I liked the place. The food appeared to be made with a Chef's flare. Not just normal cafe food, but added flare to make it taste that much better. I had the onion rings first. I would recommend you order that. It was beer battered and a huge order. My wife had the meatloaf. It appeared to be normal meatloaf, but the taste was much better than what you think of for a comfort food like this. Great blend of sausage and hamburger. I had the fish and chips. I was disappointed. Beer battered, but the fish and batter was bland. I think for the price of the meal, made things more disappointing. I don't regret going, but the bill for 2 was quit shocking. Meals average around $20.

A visit to the North Shore is only complete with lunch or dinner at The Rustic Inn. We moved to Minnesota six years ago and the Rustic Inn has become our favorite restaurant and a regular stop when we visit the North Shore. Don't bother with some of the other pie/restaurant places nearby that are mostly for the tourists. Four years ago some of the locals in Two Harbors told us about this great find and now we make it part of our regular experience. We have visited during the summer and winter months- no matter the time of year they have excellent food, great service and the pies are the best! We always order pie with our meal and then take an entire pie home at each visit (usually the five layer chocolate).

Great food. Really great pie. Probably better than Betty's. Only a short drive from Gooseberry Falls and well worth the drive.
