Story

How did Rusty’s Pizza Parlor get its name?

Just a stones throw away from the Santa Barbara coast, two young entrepreneurs, Roger and Carol Duncan scrapped enough money together to open “Rusty’s Roast Beef” in Isla Vista - the year was 1969. Before their restaurant journey began, Roger was a produce manager in a local grocery store & Carol was busy teaching at Mountain View Elementary & caring for their two young girls.

Exploring their new home town of Santa Barbara, they found that their was no pizza place to take their kids - A dream was born! They set their sights on creating a restaurant that served the highest quality pizza with great service and tons of family fun for the community.

This lofty goal came with a lot of trial and error in the kitchen - Hobart mixer manual in hand, Roger labored over creating the perfect crust (yes!)... while Carol experimented endlessly with spices and herbs for the now famous mouthwatering pizza sauce. Together they explored the best combinations of toppings to create the PERFECT PIZZA!

Finally...they were ready to introduce their pizza to Santa Barbara- but what would they call it? The sign outside boldly read; “Rusty’s Roast Beef” and changing the entire sign was financially out of the question. There was only one creative solution - pull out the hand saw, cut the sign in half; leave the “Rusty’s” and add “Pizza Parlor”....The rest, as they say, is pizza history.

Moving into the ’70’s, the owners of Rusty’s wanted to share their pizza with the rest of Santa Barbara ~ along came 2 more locations in the family-friendly neighborhoods of San Roque (Upper State Street) and the East side (North Milpas).

Always looking for unique family activities and ways to contribute to the Santa Barbara community, famous cartoonist Frank Webb lead free drawing classes at the State Street location every week. Mr. Webb would draw a letter of the alphabet and each child would follow along to learn how to magically turn their letters into animals. Can you spot ‘Carol’s Frog Pond’ and a ‘Slam Dunk’ basketball player in “The Frank Webb Room?”

Both the State Street and Milpas locations entertained customers with black and white silent films accompanied by a piano player. Felix the Cat, Charlie Chaplin & The Three Stooges were some of the line-up of films shown at the pizza parlors. The pizza was good for a place like this. We had kids so it worked great. However we spent about $100 and they wanted to charge me additional $1.60 for ranch dipping sauce. What a sour taste after spending a lot of money. Boy they had a chance of a good rating but they were so concerned with the money than serving the customer. Too bad.

We used this Rusty's for our son's rehearsal dinner. We chose it for location, the large accommodating upstairs group room and price. The bonus we got was some of the best pizza I've ever had and very good service by the manager, who went out of her way to help us. My only complaint was the salad did not arrive upstairs with the pizzas and we had to wait awhile for it, even though it had been ordered the day before. Not a big deal. Also the bathrooms were tiny and there was only one toilet for each gender so 2 for the entire place. But the building is old. All in all we had a fun time and I would definitely recommend this restaurant!

The cashier is extremly rude and gives us attitude everytime I go with my family or co workers. She forgot to give us our drinks then gave us the wrongs ones she seemed really mad,she basically threw our receipts at us, when i went to get my pizza she didnt give us plates just ignored us. We've been coming here for more than a decade the service is just unacceptable now, i know rustys pizza places aren't known for great customer service but this was just awful. Pizza is delicious though!

04/30/2017 dinner at about 8 PM. The one star is for the parking attendant and his beautiful dog..........The lady that took our order did not even smile while she took it and said. YOU DIDN'T EVEN SAY WHAT YOU WANT ON YOUR PIZZA. I think it would be nicer to ask WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE ON YOUR PIZZA? I ordered 2 large pizzas, 1 large salad trip and TEN wings. When we picked up the food my daughter counted the wings and there were 9 plus a bone. When we told them they offered a salad instead. We paid for 10 we want 10. My daughter and I ate 2 each but couldn't finish the rest because we both got so sick...she was very hot and sweaty, got the runs and threw up. She threw up more than 3 times after we got home. I blame the wings because after our friend saw how we got sick she stopped biting at 1 wing she started eating. Our friend went to pick up the beer pitcher we bought after we placed the order and she heard the people behind the counter talking about the 9 chicken wings. Please teach your employees better customer service and I hope we are mistaken at thinking they put something on the wings to make us sick....NEVER AGAIN!!

Absolutely love this place. I work next door so I'm here all the time. Some of the best bacon Mac and cheese on the planet, holy turkey burger, and swim in a river with my mouth open salmon. And if that doesn't keep you coming back the friendly staff and beautiful patio will.
